MINNEAPOLIS (3/11/05) -- Katie Hopp (Jr., Belmond, Iowa/Belmond-Klemme HS) went 6-for-8 at the plate with four runs scored, a double and home run, leading Luther College to a doubleheader sweep of host Augsburg College in nonconference softball action Friday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Hopp went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the first game, which Luther won 12-1 in six innings. She then went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and three runs scored in the second game, which Luther won 15-0 in five innings.
It was the first games of the season for both teams.
Luther used big innings in each game to pull away from the Auggies. In the first game, it was a 10-run sixth inning, in which the Norse sent 15 hitters to the plate, that broke open what was a 2-1 contest. In the second game, Luther scored eight runs in the decisive second inning, sending 12 hitters to the plate.
Meanwhile, Luther pitcher Becki Buls (So., Independence, Iowa) pitched a one-hit shutout in the second game for the Norse, striking out eight while walking just one. Katelyn Kampfe (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa/Regina HS) pitched the win for the Norse in the first game.
Erin Michael (So., Independence, Iowa/Jesup HS) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and three RBI in the first game, then went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI in the second game. Heidi Mitchell (So., Clive, Iowa/Valley HS) had two doubles and drove in four runs in the doubleheader, and Lindsay Aeilts (Fr., Waukee, Iowa/Valley HS) had six RBI in the twinbill, driving in two runs on 1-for-3 hitting in the first game, and bringing home four runs on 3-of-3 hitting in the second game, with two doubles.
Augsburg had nine hits in the first game, but stranded eight runners in the game, leaving the bases loaded in both the first and fifth innings. Katie Tweeten (So., Spring Grive, Minn.) wen 3-for-3 for the Auggies in the first game, while
Lisa Uehling (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and
Jackie Bohmbach (Fr., Hudson, Wis.) went 2-for-3 each. Uehling drove in the lone run for the Auggies in the first game, a fifth-inning single that plated
Liz Ehlers (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS).
Augsburg was limited to just one hit in the second game, a second-inning infield single by
Ashley Westerman (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.). Augsburg managed just three baserunners in the second game, stranding them all.
Shelley Harris (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) took the pitching loss for the Auggies in the first game, striking out three. Katie Tweeten (So., Spring Grove, Minn.) took the loss in the second game.
Augsburg is now off until March 20-24, when it competes in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Augsburg will play 10 games on its annual spring break trip. Luther will compete at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla., March 19-24.
