KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/21/05) -- Big innings have become the early-season bane for the Augsburg College softball team. At the Rebel Spring Games tournament on Monday at the Osceola County Sports Complex, a six-run first inning provided the spark for Fontbonne University to blank the Auggies 8-0 in six innings. In the afternoon game, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls used an eight-run fifth inning to end the game early against Augsburg, 9-1. Augsburg is now 1-5 on the season.

Two Fontbonne pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter against the Auggies in the first game, called after six innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule. Augsburg had just four runners reach base in the game, but all were stranded. Auggie batters struck out 10 times in the game.

Shelley Harris (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) pitched for the Auggies in the first game, striking out five while walking two and allowing seven hits.

Augsburg had four hits, including a double by Jodi Boyd (Jr., Hartley, Iowa/Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn HS), in the game against Wisconsin-River Falls, but the Auggies stranded five runners on base and could manage just one run against the Falcons. Meanwhile, the Falcons scored one run in the first inning and eight runs in the fifth inning.

Augsburg's lone run came in the fifth inning, as Liz Ehlers (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS) drove in Ashley Westerman (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) on a single. Boyd, Lisa Uehling (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) had the other Auggie base hits.

Katie Tweeten (So., Spring Grove, Minn.) pitched for Augsburg, strikine out three while walking three and allowing 11 hits.

Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (3/22) with a 10:40 a.m. game against Otterbein (Ohio) and a 2:20 p.m. game against St. Norbert (Wis.) at the Rebel Spring Games.
