STORY FROM CARLETON COLLEGE SPORTS INFORMATION

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/11/05) -- Vickie Gunderson blasted her first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the first, and Stephanie Dodge ripped a pair of doubles and drove in four runs as Carleton College beat Augsburg College, 10-1, in five innings in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball action on Monday at Carleton's Bell Field.

Game two was postponed by rain and wet field conditions until Tuesday (4/12) at 5 p.m. at Bell Field.

Caitlyn Cornell (4-7) was nearly as dominant on the mound as Carleton (6-12, 3-4 MIAC) was at the plate, as the junior allowed but three hits and fanned eight in five innings of work.

Gunderson, meanwhile, launched her 10th career homer in the first, staking the Knights to an early 2-0 lead by clearing the centerfield fence. Carina Ellis added a run-scoring single and a fourth run scored on a wild pitch, giving Cornell all she would need. The Knights added four more runs in the second, three on Dodge's bases-clearing double. She would later score on an Auggie error.

The Knights, playing their home opener after playing their first 17 games away from Bell Field, closed out the Auggies with two runs in the fourth, with Dodge's double scoring Erica Bolan, who reached on a bunt and stole second, and Liesl Van Ryswyk's RBI groundout.

Carleton pounded out 11 hits in only 23 at-bats, with Gunderson, Leslie Barry and Dodge all gathering two hits while Colan was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. The heart of Carleton's order -- Gunderson, Barry, Laura Parisi, Bolan and Dodge -- were a combined 10-for-13 while scoring nine of Carleton's 10 runs.

Cornell allowed only one ball out of the infield, a first-inning double by Ashley Westerman (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.), which accounted for the Auggies' lone run. She drove in Jolene Ross (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS).

Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) and Ross had the other Auggie hits. Shelley Harris (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) pitched for the Auggies.

Cornell fanned the side in the fourth and struck out the final two hitters in the fifth.
