Softball 4/12/05 -- Carleton 8, Augsburg 1
GAME 2 BOXSCORE
STORY FROM CARLETON COLLEGE SPORTS INFORMATION
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/12/05) -- It took an extra day, but the end result looked the same as Carleton College completed its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball sweep of Augsburg College, 8-1 on Tuesday, as Vickie Gunderson blasted her second homer in as many days as she and Stephanie Dodge notched three hits each.
The Knights (7-12 overall, 4-4 MIAC) picked up their first MIAC sweep of the season in a game delayed one day by rain on Monday.
Gunderson blasted her second home run of the season and 11th of her career in the first, giving the Knights an early 1-0 lead. The hosts essentially ended the game with a seven-run third inning, as they batted around with 10 hits. Gunderson doubled and added a run-scoring single later in the frame. Leslie Barry added two base hits in the inning and Dodge ripped a two-run double.
Augsburg used three hits and two Carleton errors to push across its lone run in the fourth, but Carleton starter Caitlyn Cornell (5-7) would allow nothing else, scattering nine hits and fanning six with no walks.
Jolene Ross (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS),
Ashley Westerman (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) and
Hilary Neste (So., ) had two hits apiece for the Auggies.
Shelley Harris (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) pitched for the Auggies, but just two of the eight runs against her were earned, as the Knights took advantage of five Augsburg errors.
Jamie Lykken, Barry and Liesl Van Ryswyk added two hits each for Carleton.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Thursday (4/14) at 4 p.m., as Augsburg plays at Concordia-Moorhead and Carleton travels across town to face rival St. Olaf.
