ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/20/05) --
Jolene Ross (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 5-for-8 at the plate with four runs scored in the doubleheader for Augsburg College, while Randi Wuensch went 5-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBI for the College of St. Catherine, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball twinbill on Wednesday afternoon at St. Catherine.
Augsburg won the first game 8-6, while St. Catherine took the second game 6-4. Augsburg is now 8-18 overall, 4-10 in MIAC play, while St. Catherine is now 15-14 overall, 6-8 in MIAC play.
A six-run third inning, in which Augsburg sent 10 batters to the plate, gave the Auggies the early advantage en route to the first-game victory. The inning was keyed by a two-run triple by
Lisa Uehling (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), while
Trista Gundersen (So., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and
Brenda Grabau (Sr., Fountain, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) also had RBI singles.
Jackie Bohmbach (So., Hudson, Wis.) singled and later scored on a fielding error in the fourth inning, putting the Auggies ahead 7-0. St. Catherine scored in the fourth, as Jessica Lewandowski drove in Wuensch on a groundout.
The Wildcats scored four runs in the fifth inning, as Morgan Kane homered, Wuensch singled to drive in a home and Lewandowski hit a two-run single. Augsburg put a run across in the sixth as Ross singled and scored on a single by
Ashley Westerman (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.).
A solo homer by Rita Pomroy in the seventh completed St. Catherine's scoring in the seventh inning, as the Wildcats had two runners on base before relief pitcher
Kati Tweeten (So., Spring Grove, Minn.) retired the side to record the save for the Auggies.
Shelley Harris (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) struck out three over six innings of work to score the win for the Auggies in the first game, while Lewandowski took the loss, despite 10 strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Lewandowski and Kelly Walentiny went 3-for-4 each for St. Catherine, while Ross went 3-for-4 and Uehling went 2-for-4 for the Auggies. Grabau and Bohmbach also went 2-for-4, with Bohmbach scoring twice.
St. Catherine scored its six runs in the second game in the first two innings, building a lead before Augsburg rallied. Four runs came across in the first inning, as Wuensch singled to drive in a run, and other runs came across on a bases-loaded walk, a bases-loaded hit batter and a wild pitch. A Lewandowski single and another bases-loaded walk scored two more runs for the Wildcats in the second.
Augsburg cut the lead in the third inning, as Ross scored on a passed ball and Tweeten singled to drive home
Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS). Two more runs came across for the Auggies in the fourth, on a passed ball and fielding error. Augsburg stranded four runners in the final three innings, including two in the seventh.
Tweeten pitched for Augsburg but lasted just an inning-and-a-third. Harris finished the game, striking out five while not allowing a run in 4.2 innings of work. Ashley Decker pitched a complete-game win for St. Catherine, striking out three.
St. Catherine hosts Concordia-Moorhead in an MIAC doubleheader on Thursday (4/21) at 1 p.m. and plays at Hamline on Saturday (4/23) at 1 p.m. Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a home doubleheader against St. Mary's at Edor Nelson Field.
