ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (4/30/05) -- Rachel Franklin had three hits and drove in four runs, scoring twice in the doubleheader, as Bethel University scored a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball sweep of visiting Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon at Orth Park.
Franklin went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the first-game, 9-2 victory, while driving in a run and scoring twice in the second-game, 8-3 win. Bethel is now 14-23 overall, 8-14 in MIAC play, while Augsburg finishes its season 8-26 overall, 4-18 in MIAC play. Augsburg lost its final nine games in a row to close the season.
Bethel built an 8-0 lead after two innings in the first game, keyed by a two-run double by Franklin in a six-run second inning as 12 runners came to the plate.
Augsburg scored twice in the third inning, as
Kati Tweeten (So., Spring Grove, Minn.) hit a run-scoring double and later scored on a wild pitch. A single by Angela Vedders in the fourth inning closed the scoring for Bethel.
Vedders picked up the victories in both games for Bethel in the pitching circle, striking out seven while not walking a batter and allowing eight hits in a complete-game effort in the first game, while pitching six innings and striking out two while allowing just two hits and one run in the second game. Franklin pitched an inning for the Royals.
Augsburg pitcher
Shelley Harris (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) took the loss in the first game, striking out two while waking two and allowing nine hits. Tweeten took the loss in the second game, striking out one but allowing 14 Bethel hits.
Bethel built another 8-0 lead in the second game, this time after four innings, before Augsburg scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.
Ten batters came to the plate in the third inning and eight reached base on hits, all singles, for the Royals, and three more runs came across in the fourth.
Augsburg scored twice in the fifth inning against reliever Franklin, as
Trista Gundersen (So., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored on a passed ball and
Jackie Bohmbach (So., Hudson, Wis.) scored on a grounder by
Amy Kelvie (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry HS).
With Vedders back in the game, Augsburg scored another run in the sixth, as
Liz Ehlers (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS) scored on a wild pitch.
Jolene Ross (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS), Tweeten and
Ashley Westerman (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) had two hits apiece for the Auggies in the first game, with
Lisa Uehling (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Bohmbach adding hits. Augsburg was limited to just three hits in the second game, from
Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS), Tweeten and Uehling.
