MINNEAPOLIS (4/6/05) --
Shelley Harris (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) struck out 10 batters while walking just one in 14 innings of work, leading Augsburg College to a split with Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Macalester won the first game 5-4 in nine innings, and Augsburg won the second game 8-0 in five innings. Augsburg is now 4-11 overall, 1-3 in MIAC play, while Macalester is now 3-17 overall, 1-3 in MIAC play.
Trista Gundersen (So., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 4-for-5 in the doubleheader for the Auggies, driving in three runs, while Auggie leadoff hitter
Jolene Ross (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 5-for-8, scoring four runs and driving in one.
The teams played to a 1-1 draw after seven innings of the first game, and both teams scored three runs in the eighth inning. In Macalester's half of the eighth inning, the Scots scored on a fielding error, then Katie Malnor (Jr., Madison, Wis./Edgewood HS) plated two runs on a single. But Augsburg answered in the bottom of the extra frame, as
Kati Tweeten (So., Spring Grove, Minn.) drove in two runs on a single and came in to score on a single by Gundersen.
But Macalester got the eventual game-winning run in its half of the ninth inning, as Sarah Lambert (So., Freeport, Ill./Illinois Math and Science HS) reached base after being hit by a pitch, then scored on a throwing error as Katie Grudnowski (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) reached base with two outs.
Lambert and Laura Meinke (Jr., Stillwater, Okla.) had doubles for the Scots, and Kat Sprole (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt HS) and Erin Duvall (So., Moses Lake, Wash.) had two hits each.
Alisha Seifert (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) struck out nine while not walking a batter to pick up the win for the Scots in the first game. None of the four runs scored against her were earned.
Harris struck out six batters in the first game for the Auggies while walking one, then struck out four while not walking a batter and allowing just three Macalester hits in the second-game victory.
Augsburg took advantage of 11 wild pitches thrown by Macalester pitcher Kristen Mainz (So., Farmington, Minn.) in the second game, scoring five of its eight runs on wild pitches. Mainz also had seven walks and two hit batters, while allowing six hits and striking out three.
Augsburg plated seven runs in the first three innings. Gunderson drove in two runs, while Ross went 3-for-4, driving in a run and scoring three times.
Jackie Bohmbach (So., Hudson, Wis.) added a double for the Auggies.
Both teams have MIAC doubleheaders on Saturday (4/9) at 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts defending national champion St. Thomas at Edor Nelson Field, and Macalester plays host to Bethel.
