Augsburg opens Rebel Spring Games with 5-0 loss to Endicott (Mass.), bounces back with 7-6 (8 innings) win over Washington and Jefferson (Pa.)

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/19/06) -- Lisa Uehling (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, including the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Augsburg College claimed a 7-6 victory over Washington and Jefferson College (Pa.) at the Rebel Spring Games softball tournament on Sunday at the Osceola County Sports Complex.

In the opening game of Augsburg's week in Florida, the Auggies dropped a 5-0 decision to Endicott College (Mass.). Augsburg is now 5-1 on the season.

Uehling drove in the game-winning run on a base hit in the eighth inning against Washington and Jefferson, as the teams played with the international tiebreaker (placing a runner at second base to start the inning). Jacci Mattern (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) also went 2-for-4 with a run scored, driving in one run and hitting a double.

Jolene Ross (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) also drove in runs for the Auggies, and Kati Tweeten (Jr., Spring Grove, Minn.) scored twice.

Sarah Green (Fr., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) struck out one in 4.1 innings of work, with Shelley Harris (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) claiming the win with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief. Green also had a double for the Auggies at the plate.

Augsburg used a four-run fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead, but Washington and Jefferson tied the game with three runs in the seventh inning. Stacey Bugle went 3-for-5 for Washington and Jefferson with a double, and Ally Stasik went 3-for-4, scoring twice.

Against Endicott, the Auggies fell victim to Gulls' All-American pitcher Robyn Savitske, who threw a one-hit shutout, striking out 14 while not walking a batter. The Auggies' lone hit was a fourth-inning single by Ross.

Endicott was ranked No. 23 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason national poll. The Gulls have won three straight Commonwealth Coast Conference titles, and Savitske struck out 199 opponents last year en route to a 23-1 record and 0.72 earned-run average.

Rachel Pearson and Megan Sargent had two hits each for the Gulls, with Danielle Sargent driving in two runs.

Harris started for the Auggies and pitched four innings, striking out four. Green pitched two innings of relief, striking out one.

Augsburg resumes action at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday (3/20), facing Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 12:30 p.m. and Western Connecticut State at 2:20 p.m.
