ST. PAUL, Minn. (3/29/06) -- Senior Nikki Conway hit her 35th and 36th career home runs and went 4-for-6 on the day to lead the top-ranked University of St. Thomas (17-1 overall, 2-0 MIAC) to a pair of shutout wins over visiting Augsburg College (5-11, 0-2) in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball play Wednesday in St. Paul. The Toms won 7-0 and 8-0, the latter game in five innings.
Five different players homered for UST off two different Auggie starters. The Tommies now have 21 home runs in 18 games from eight different players.
Conway, Carrie Embree and Maria Bye all hit solo homers in game one. Conway, Ashley Carlblom and Fiona Lodge homered in game two. UST is now 30-0 vs. Division III teams when Conway has homered during her career.
Bye pitched six shutout innings in game one as she struck out 11 and allowed three hits and three walks. Senior Janet Nagle retired nine of the 10 batters she faced in game two with four strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Kallie Samuelson pitched the other three innings on the day.
Conway and Bye each went 2-for-2 to lead a 12-hit attack in game two. In game one, Embree went 3-for-3 and Conway, Mandy Evans and Colleen Owen each had two hits to lead an 11-hit attack.
Jolene Ross (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) had two of Augsburg's six hits on the day.
Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) and
Kati Tweeten (Jr., Spring Grove, Minn.) had the Auggies' other hits in the first game, and
Jacci Mattern (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) and
Lisa Uehling (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had the team's other hits in the second game.
Shelley Harris (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) struck out three in the first game for the Auggies, while
Sarah Green (Fr., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) and Tweeten pitched for the Auggies in the second game.
Augsburg hosts Martin Luther in a nonconference doubleheader on Thursday (3/30) at 4 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, and host Gustavus in a conference doubleheader Saturday (4/1) at 1 p.m. The Tommies play Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hamline.
