Augsburg splits with Gustavus

MINNEAPOLIS (4/1/06) -- Shelley Harris (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the first game for Augsburg College, while Julie Mahre (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Mary Furlong (Sr., Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) went 2-for-4 each in the second game for Gustavus Adolphus College, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg won the first game 1-0, while Gustavus won the second game 4-3. Augsburg is now 8-12 overall, 1-3 in MIAC play, while Gustavus is now 7-5 overall, 1-1 in MIAC play, snapping a six-game winning streak.

Harris pitched a complete-game effort in the first game, striking out one while allowing just three hits and one walk. Gustavus stranded four baserunners in the first game.

Augsburg scored the lone run of the first game in the fifth inning, as Lisa Uehling (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) reached base on a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Audra Thimmesch-Gill (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS), then scored after a single by Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) and a Gustavus throwing error.

Gustavus had two runners aboard in the seventh inning on a walk and single, but both were stranded as the game ended on an infield groundout.

Gustavus took an early lead in the second game, as Mahre stole second and scored on a double-steal attempt in the first inning, and Audrey Lenoch (Sr., Pine Island, Minn.) drove in Emily Klein (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.) on a single in the third inning. Another run came across in the fourth on an fielder's choice by Whitney Bartolo (So., Anoka, Minn.), bringing home Dawn Lewis (So., Minnetonka, Minn.).

Augsburg cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Jacci Mattern (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Jolene Ross (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) reached base, collected a double-steal, and scored on a fielder's choice by Sarah Green (Fr., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) and a single by Kati Tweeten (Jr., Spring Grove, Minn.). Magnuson scored on a throwing error in the fifth inning for the Auggies to tie the game at 3-3.

But Gustavus took the lead for good with a run in the sixth inning, as Lenoch scored on a wild pitch. Augsburg had a runner aboard in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the game ended on a fly-ball double-play for the Gusties.

Ross wen 2-for-3 for the Auggies in the second game. Green pitched five innings and surrendered all four runs, with Harris pitching in relief.

Gustavus' Bree Lindenberg (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) started the second game and pitched 4.1 innings, striking out three while walking two. DeWitz struck out two in relief to score the win.

Both teams return to MIAC play with doubleheaders on Tuesday (4/4) at 4 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Concordia-Moorhead and Gustavus playing at St. Olaf.
