Auggies even MIAC record at 5-5 with doubleheader sweep of Macalester

MINNEAPOLIS (4/8/06) -- Lisa Uehling (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had a double and triple, driving in a run and scoring one in the first game, while Sarah Green (Fr., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) hit a three-run home run and picked up the pitching win in the second game, as Augsburg College claimed a sweep of Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Behind a complete-game, three-strikeout performance by Shelley Harris (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS), the Auggies won the first game 3-1, then completed the sweep with an 8-5 win in the second game. Augsburg is now 12-14 overall, 5-5 in MIAC play, having won seven of its last 10 games, including the last three in a row. Macalester is now 2-18 overall, 1-9 in MIAC play, having lost its last seven straight games.

Macalester took the early lead in both games, but Augsburg was able to rally each time to claim the sweep. The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game, as a Meredith Wisniewski (Fr., Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South HS) single plated Nyalleng Moorosi (Sr., Hlotse, Lestoho/Red Cross Nordic HS).

But Augsburg scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the lead and the win. Jacci Mattern (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) led off the fourth with a triple to left, and scored on a ground-rule double by Uehling. In the fifth, Jodi Boyd (Sr., Hartley, Iowa/Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn HS) reached base on an error and scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth inning, Uehling hit a one-out triple and scored on a single by Kati Tweeten (Jr., Spring Grove, Minn.).

Mattern, Uehling and Ashley Westerman (So., Bemidji, Minn.) had two hits each for the Auggies in the first game, while Kate Ayer (Sr., Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard HS) had two hits for the Scots.

Harris struck out three while not allowing a walk and only seven hits in the first game, while Kristen Mainz (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) struck out four while allowing nine hits and no walks for the Scots.

Macalester took the lead early again in the second game, as Katie Grudnowski (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) led off the game on a double and scored on a single by Laura Meinke (Sr., Stillwater, Okla.). Augsburg tied the game in the bottom of the first, as Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) hit a ground-rule double and scored on a single by Jolene Ross (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS)

A ground-rule double by Westerman and a single by Marissa Lindback (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) gave the Auggies a 2-1 lead in the second, but the Scots took the lead back in the third, as a double by Zara Bohan (So., Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional HS) drove in Grudnowski, and pinch-runner Katie Malnor (Sr., Madison, Wis./Edgewood HS) scored on a single and fielding error.

Augsburg tied the game in the bottom of the third, as Ross singled and scored on a double to right field by Tweeten.

The Auggies scored four runs in the fifth inning, as Mattern tripled and scored on a groundout by Uehling, and Green hit a three-run homer to left field, her second homer of the season and Augsburg's fifth round-tripper of the year.

Macalester scored single runs in the sixth and seventh, as a Kate Ziegler (Fr., Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) single plated Erinn Duvall (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.), and a double by Marisa Raether (So., San Marino, Calif.) scored Moorosi. Augsburg scored once in the sixth, as Magnuson hit a triple to left field and scored on a fielder's choice by Ross.

Green started for Augsburg and collected two strikeouts with one walk in five innings of work. Harris relieved her and struck out one in earning her second save of the year. Hannah Wydeven (Fr., Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) started and pitched 4.1 innings for the Scots before being relieved by Mainz. Wydeven struck out three while Mainz struck out four in 1.2 innings of work.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (4/12) at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader at St. Mary's, while Macalester returns to action on Monday (4/10) at 4 p.m. with a nonconference doubleheader at Northwestern-Roseville.
