ORANGE, Calif. (3/19/07) -- The Augsburg College softball team dropped two games on Monday at the Chapman University Sun West Tournament at Hart Park, falling 11-2 to Williams College (Mass.) and 17-3 in five innings to Tufts University (Mass.). Augsburg is now 1-9 on the season.
Williams scored 10 runs in the final four innings, including a six-run fourth inning, to pull away from the Auggies in the opener. Augsburg scored single runs in the first and sixth innings.
In the first, Augsburg's
Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) singled and scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth, Magnuson led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by
Kati Tweeten (Sr., Spring Grove, Minn.).
Tweeten started and pitched 3.2 innings for the Auggies, striking out two.
Sarah Green (So., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) pitched 3.1 innings of relief, striking out three while walking three.
Playing Tufts for the second straight day, the Jumbos used an eight-run third inning and five-run fourth inning to end the game early via the NCAA eight-run rule. Tufts pounded out 19 hits, while limiting Augsburg to three hits -- singles by Magnuson,
Averie Swanson (Fr., St. James, Minn.) and
Marissa Lindback (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS).
Augsburg scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings. In the first,
Jacci Mattern (So., Lakeville, Minn.) scored on an RBI groundout by Tweeten. In the fourth, a Swanson single plated
Ashley Westerman (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.), and in the fifth, Mattern scored on a throwing error.
Augsburg has a day off before continuing action at the Sun West Tournament on Wednesday (3/21) with games against California State-East Bay and Hope International (Calif.).
