ORANGE, Calif. (3/22/07) -- The Augsburg College softball team was edged by Wesleyan University (Mass.) 3-0, and dropped a 16-0, five-inning decision to No. 6-ranked Chapman University (Calif.) on Thursday at the Chapman Sun West Tournament at Hart Park. Augsburg is now 1-13 on the season
Against Wesleyan, a three-run first inning gave Wesleyan all the runs it would need. The Cardinals scored all their runs after two were out in the first, on a wild pitch, fielding error and a two-run double. Two of the three runs against Augsburg starter
Averie Swanson (Fr., St. James, Minn.) were unearned.
Sarah Green (So., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) pitched 6.1 innings of relief for the Auggies, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking only two.
Augsburg scored a run in the fourth inning, with
Jolene Ross (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) singled to drive in
Whitney Restemayer (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.). Another run came across in the sixth, as Restemayer hit her first collegiate home run, a solo shot. However, Augsburg left the bases loaded in the sixth, three of eight runners left on base by the Auggies in the game.
Restemayer went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Auggies, while Swanson and
Trista Gundersen (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) each went 2-for-3 against Wesleyan.
Against Chapman, the Auggies collected just three hits, singles by Ross, Gundersen and
Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS). The Auggies stranded six runners on base.
Chapman, which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III national rankings, scored 11 runs in the first inning, sending 15 batters to the plate. The Panthers collected eight hits and took advantage of four Augsburg errors in the inning. The game ended after five innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Kati Tweeten (Sr., Spring Grove, Minn.) started for the Auggies, and just five of the 14 runs scored against her were earned. Green pitched two in,ings of relief.
Augsburg closes out its week of games at the Sun West Tournament on Friday (3/23) with games against Dana (Neb.) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
