MINNEAPOLIS (4/14/07) -- Kaity Wightman (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) went 4-for-7 with four runs scored and three RBI on a home run and double, and Morgan Betker (So., Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley HS) went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, as the University of St. Thomas swept Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
St. Thomas (28-2 overall, 12-0 MIAC), ranked No. 1 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III national rankings, won the first game 9-1 in six innings and won the second game 13-3 in five innings, as both games were shortened due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Augsburg (3-21 overall, 2-6 MIAC) was paced by
Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS), who had three hits, and by
Jacci Mattern (So., Lakeville, Minn.),
Jolene Ross (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) and
Marissa Lindback (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), who had two hits each. Ross, Lindback and
Averie Swanson (Fr., St. James, Minn.) each had doubles for the Auggies.
Wightman had a double, single and a three-run homer for the Tommies in the first game, part of a four-run third inning that broke the game open. Stephanie Moores (So., Big Lake, Minn.) and Fiona Lodge (Jr., Duluth, Minn./East HS) had doubles for the Tommies in the first game, and Maria Bye (Jr., Maple Plain, Minn./Orono HS) had a triple.
Bye was the starting pitcher in both games, but only pitched two innings in each and did not receive the decision. She struck out three in the first game and five in the second game. Carrie Embree (Sr., Waukee, Iowa) struck out seven in three innings of work to score the win in the first game, with Marta Radcliffe (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) pitching an inning of relief. Kallie Samuelson (So., Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) pitched three innings of relief in the second game, striking out one, to score the win.
Betker had two doubles for the Tommies in the second game, driving in two runs. Embree also had a double and drove in two runs, and Alison Wright (Fr., Pewaukee, Wis.) also had a double in going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. The Tommies batted around twice in the second game, scoring six runs on seven hits and sending 11 batters to the plate in the third inning, while scoring four runs on four hits and sending 10 batters to the plate in the fourth frame.
Sarah Green (So., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) took the pitching losses for Augsburg in both games, with Swanson pitching in relief in both games. Green struck out three in six innings of work, while Swanson struck out four in five innings of work.
Ross went 2-for-3 for the Auggies in the first game, with Swanson, Magnuson and
Whitney Restemayer (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) also collecting hits. In the second game, Mattern, Magnuson and Lindback had two hits each, with
Trista Gundersen (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS),
Rachel Doherty (Fr., St. Paul Park, Minn./Park-Cottage Grove HS),
Liz Ehlers (So., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington HS) and
Sarah Mueller (So., Green Bay, Wis./Southwest HS) also collecting hits.
Augsburg returns to action with a rescheduled doubleheader on Sunday (4/15) at 1 p.m. at Concordia-Moorhead. Augsburg is also in action on Tuesday (4/17) at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader at St. Catherine. St. Thomas hosts Concordia-Moorhead on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
