Augsburg falls in twinbill at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/19/07) -- Ashley Westerman (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) collected four hits and drove in two runs for Augsburg College in the doubleheader, but the Auggies dropped aMinnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball twinbill to Carleton College, falling 4-1 and 7-5 on Thursday afternoon at Carleton's Bell Field.

Jacci Mattern (So., Lakeville, Minn.) had three hits, including a double, for the Auggies, now 3-27 overall, 2-12 in MIAC play. Carleton is now 7-19 overall, 3-7 in MIAC play.

Augsburg kept the first game close, but a two-run fifth inning, on RBI singles by Elise Johnson and Michael Johnson, gave the Knights a 4-1 lead. Mari Jo Long struck out seven while not walking a batter for Carleton to score the win.

Carleton scored a run in the first, as a groundout by Emily Maland enabled Shayna Simmons to score. Augsburg tied the game in the top of the second, as Mattern doubled and scored on a single by Marissa Lindback (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS). But the Knights took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, as Michael Johnson doubled and scored on a fielder's choice by Erica Bolan.

Sarah Green (So., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) struck out one in six innings of pitching for the Auggies, allowing 10 hits. In addition to Westerman's two hits, Jolene Ross (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) also had two hits. Michael Johnson had three hits for Carleton, while Simmons and Elise Johnson had two hits each.

In the second game, Augsburg had a 5-3 lead afte rthe top of the fifth inning, but a four-run fifth frame for Carleton gave the hosts the victory. RBI singles by Rhemi Abrams-Fuller and Bolan, along with a run-scoring double by Liesl Van Ryswyk and a run-scoring groundout by Lisa Friedman, gave the Knights the advantage.

Augsburg scored a run in the first, as a single by Westerman plated Whitney Restemayer (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.). Carleton scored a run in the first and two in the second to take the lead, but the Auggies came back with a three-run third frame. Mattern singled, stole second and third, and scored on an RBI single by Westerman, and an Averie Swanson (Fr., St. James, Minn.) single brought home Westerman and Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS). In the fifth, the Auggies added another run, as a single by Swanson plated Ross.

Mattern, Westerman, Magnuson and Swanson had two hits each for the Auggies, while Elise Johnson, Maland and Bolan had two hits each for Carleton.

Kati Tweeten (Sr., Spring Grove, Minn.) struck out two while walking four in a complete-game effort for Augsburg. Van Ryswyk pitched three innings for the Knights, with Long pitching four innings of relief.

Both teams are in action on Saturday (4/21) at 1 p.m. with MIAC doubleheaders. Augsburg hosts St. Benedict at Edor Nelson Field, while Carleton plays at Bethel.
