MINNEAPOLIS (4/21/07) -- The College of St. Benedict scored two runs in the first inning for all the scoring it would need in the first game, and scored two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the second game, then scored a run in the eighth to win the game, as the Blazers swept a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from host Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

St. Benedict (14-12 overall, 9-5 MIAC) won the first game 2-0 and claimed the second game 3-2 in eight innings.

Augsburg (3-29 overall, 2-14 MIAC) pitcher Sarah Green (So., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) struck out seven in 14 innings of work.

In the first game, back-to-back doubles, by Nikki Zappa (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) and Molly Bodeker (So., Eagan, Minn.), plated two runs, with Patty Devoy (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation HS) and Zappa. The Blazers had seven hits, incuding two by Devoy and a double by Jillian Rigg (So., Billings, Mont./Central Catholic HS), but stranded eight runners in the game.

St. Benedict pitcher Monica Eiden (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) struck out two while walking two and allowing just two Augsburg hits to score the complete-game victory. Green struck out three while waking three for the Auggies.

Jolene Ross (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Kati Tweeten (Sr., Spring Grove, Minn.) had the lone hits for the Auggies in the first game.

In the second game, St. Benedict scored twice with two outs in the top of the seventh to overcome a 1-0 deficit and eventually force extra innings. A double by Shannon Eveland (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) brought home Brittney Johnson (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS), and two wild pitches brought Eveland home.

Augsburg tied the game in the bottom of the inning off of reliever Eiden, as Jacci Mattern (So., Lakeville, Minn.) walked, moved up on singles by Whitney Restemayer (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) and Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS), and scored on a single by Ashley Westerman (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.).

In the top of the eighth, the Blazers' Jinnie Regli (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) doubled off of Augsburg reliever Tweeten, and scored on a single by Johnson. Eiden then retired the Auggies in order in the bottom of the eighth to claim the win.

Johnbson had two hits for St. Benedict, while Mattern, Restemayer and Magnuson had two hits each for Augsburg. St. Benedict starter Andrea Fahey (So., Little Canada, Minn./St. Bernard's HS) struck out four in six innings of work, while Green struck out four in seven innings for Augsburg.

Both teams return to MIAC action with doubleheaders on Sunday (4/22) at 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts St. Mary's at Edor Nelson Field, while St. Benedict plays at St. Olaf.
