Softball 4/22/07 -- St. Mary's 15, Augsburg 5

MINNEAPOLIS (4/22/07) -- Scoring nine runs in the sixth inning, the St. Mary's University softball team pulled away from Augsburg College, en route to a 15-5 victory in the first game of a scheduled Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field. The second game was postponed due to rain, and will be played on Tuesday (4/24) at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
St. Mary's (15-10 overall, 10-5 MIAC) sent 14 batters to the plate in the sixth inning, taking advantage of eight hits, a fielder's choice, hit batter and a walk to pull away from a 3-3 tie. The inning was played during a steady rain that had started in the fifth frame.
Whitney Restemayer (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) went 3-for-4 for Augsburg (3-30 overall, 2-15 MIAC), including a double, while
Jolene Ross (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 2-for-3.
Ashley Westerman (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) and
Averie Swanson (Fr., St. James, Minn.) also had doubles for the Auggies.
Nikki Jung (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Cardinals, while Cassie Otte (So., Randolph, Minn.) had two hits and scored three runs. Jenny Giannini (Jr., River Grove, Ill./East Leyden HS), Danielle Geske (So., Rosemount, Minn.) and Megan Pulvermacher (So., Richland Center, Wis.) had two hits each, with Pulvermacher driving in two runs. Tara Close (Sr., North St. Paul, Minn.) went 1-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored and a double, and Melissa Mondo (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) scored two runs.
Megan Wallisch (Sr., Loveland, Colo./Holy Family HS) struck out three over five innings to pick up the victory for the Cardinals, with Sara Fitzgerald () throwing two innings of relief.
Sarah Green (So., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) struck out two in 5.1 innings of work for Augsburg, with
Kati Tweeten (Sr., Spring Grove, Minn.) striking out two in 1.2 innings of relief.
