Augsburg swept in doubleheader at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/25/07) -- Hamline University scored 10 runs in the second inning and went on to a 15-0 win in five innings over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Helen Meredith Field. The Pipers won game one 3-2 for the series sweep.

In the inning, the Pipers (19-11 overall, 12-6 MIAC) matched their highest run total for a game on the year. The Pipers scored nine runs with two outs in the inning.

First baseman Sarah Dittberner had three RBIs in the inning -- a run-scoring single to start the scoring and later a two-run single. Leftfielder Grace Weinreich hit a two-run triple while designated player Kellie Hoen added a two-run double. Hoen and Dittberner each had two hits to the Pipers' nine-hit attack.

Hamline pitcher Rachel Roberts allowed four hits through five innings. She struck out one and walked none. Augsburg pitcher Kati Tweeten (Sr., Spring Grove, Minn.) took the loss for Augsburg (3-33 overall, 2-18 MIAC), allowing 10 runs -- none earned -- in two innings.

In game one, the Pipers used a three-run home run in the third by Weinreich to post a 3-2 win.

Trailing 1-0 after an Averie Swanson (Fr., St. James, Minn.) homer, Weinreich returned the favor with her fourth bomb of the year. Centerfielder Jourdan Ulrich reached on an error before catcher Ashley Anderberg was hit by a pitch to set up Weinreich's homer.

The Pipers got into trouble in the seventh after two straight singles to open the inning, Marissa Lindback (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) hit a one-out single to bring the Auggies within 3-2.

But Roberts induced to groundouts to end the game. Roberts picked up her third save of the year. Hamline starter Theresa Boleen went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. She struck out one and walked one. Sarah Green (So., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) took the loss for the Auggies. Jolene Ross (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Auggies.

The Pipers will play at St. Catherine on Friday (2/27) at 2:30 p.m. Augsburg closes its season with a doubleheader on Saturday (2/28) at 1 p.m. against St. Olaf.
