Auggies split with Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (4/7/06) -- Karino Roe (Fr., Grey Eagle, Minn.) went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and a double in the first game for Bethel University, while Lisa Uehling (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in the second game for Augsburg College, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Bethel's Ona North Field.

In a game delayed from Thursday due to rain, Bethel won the first game 7-6. Augsburg won the second game, played in its entirety on Friday, 5-2. Augsburg is now 10-14 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play, having won five of its last eight games. Bethel is now 7-9 overall, 2-4 in MIAC play.

Augsburg pounded out 10 hits in the second game, including a 3-for-4 effort with two runs scored by Jolene Ross (So., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) and two hits each from Kati Tweeten (Jr., Spring Grove, Minn.) and Sarah Green (Fr., Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS).

RBI doubles by Uehling and Tweeten gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead in the first inning, cut to 2-1 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI fielder's choice by Bethel's Hannah Subich (Jr., Mansfield, Ohio/St. Peters HS).

Augsburg scored a run in the third on an RBI single by Green, then added two more runs in the fourth, as Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) scored on a groundout by Jacci Mattern (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.), and a Uehling single plated Ross. Bethel then cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, as a single by Amber Beasley (Fr., Medina, Minn.) drove in Kristen Finell (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.), who had reached base on a triple.

Augsburg pitcher Shelley Harris (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) struck out four in a complete-game effort, retiring the Bethel side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Beasley and Diane Christianson (Sr., Little Canada, Minn.) had two hits apiece for the Royals. Angela Vedders (Sr., Foreston, Minn./Milaca HS) and Christi Paulson (Jr., Young America, Minn./Lester Prairie HS) saw pitching time for Bethel in the second game.

Bethel took a 5-0 lead in the first game before Augsburg rallied with its six runs in the final four innings to trim the lead to 7-6. The Auggies had the tying run on second base in the seventh inning of the second game, but could not get her across. Vedders struck out four in a complete-game effort for the Royals.

An RBI triple by Beasley and an RBI single by Roe gave the Royals a 2-0 advantage in the first inning, and Finell scored on a wild pitch in the second. Two more runs were scored in the third inning on singles by Christianson and Beth Spurrier (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.), and the Royals scored twice in the fourth frame on a fielder's choice RBI by Laura Naig (So., Kasson, Minn.) and a single by Roe.

Augsburg scored twice in the fourth inning, on an RBI double by Uehling and a grounder by Ashley Westerman (So., Bemidji, Minn.). A single by Mattern drove in a run in the fifth. Three runs came in for the Auggies in the seventh, with a Mattern flyout plating Jodi Boyd (Sr., Hartley, Iowa/Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn HS) and two more runs coming across on a fielding error.

Harris started for Augsburg, with Green pitching in relief in the first game. Mattern went 3-for-4 for the Auggies with two RBI, while Uehling had three RBI in the game.

Both teams return to MIAC play with doubleheaders on Saturday (4/8) at 4 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Macalester at Edor Nelson Field and Bethel hosting Gustavus.
