MINNEAPOLIS --
Melissa Larsen (JR, Andover, Minn.) collected both pitching wins, striking out six while allowing just one walk, three hits and one run in nine innings of work, as the Augsburg College softball team claimed a doubleheader sweep of St. Olaf College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (9-25 overall, 7-9 MIAC) beat St. Olaf (4-24 overall, 2-12 MIAC) 8-0 and 2-1. The first game was ended in the fifth inning due to the NCAA's eight-run rule. Since starting the season 2-22, Augsburg has won seven of its last 10 games.
Larsen struck out five while allowing just one hit in five innings of work in the first game, then allowed just two hits while striking out two with a walk and one run in four innings of work in the second game.
Kylee Persing (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) and
Sarah Green (SR, Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) pitched in relief, with Green picking up the save.
Augsburg used a six-run first inning, sending 10 batters to the plate, to take command of the first game. A two-run double by
Amanda Schwartz (FY, Becker, Minn.), a run-scoring triple by
Laura Strandell (SO, Pine Island, Minn.), RBI singles by Persing and
Cassie Crego (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and a sacrifice fly by
Jessa Hinz (SO, Richfield, Minn.) gave the Auggies the early advantage.
Augsburg added two more runs in the third inning to build the 8-0 lead. Strandell and Persing went 3-for-3 for the Auggies in the game, with Persing scoring two runs. Hinz and Crego went 2-for-2.
In the second game, Augsburg scored both of its runs in the third inning, as
Sabrina Siple (FY, Farmington, Minn.) walked and scored on a throwing error, and
Jennifer Castillo (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) singled to drive in Crego.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (4/21) at 4 p.m., with a rescheduled doubleheader at St. Benedict. St. Olaf is back in action on Sunday (4/19) at 11 a.m., with a doubleheader at Concordia-Moorhead.
St. Olaf's lone run of the doubleheader came in the fourth inning, as Ali Berens (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Holy Family HS) hit a solo home run to left field.
Katie Truax (SO, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) and Erin Johnson (SR, Shakopee, Minn.) pitched complete-game efforts for the Oles in the doubleheader, with Truax striking out two in the first game.
