ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) went 5-for-7 with a triple and two RBI in the doubleheader, as the Augsburg College softball team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with two losses at the College of St. Catherine on Thursday afternoon at the CSC Field. St. Catherine claimed a 6-1 win in the opener and an 11-8 win in the nightcap.
Jennifer Castillo (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) went 4-for-8 at the plate with two runs scored for the Auggies (2-18 overall, 0-2 MIAC), while Sarah Mueller (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Southwest HS) went 3-for-7 at the plate.
Jenna Clark hit 5-for-7 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored for St. Catherine (5-11 overall, 4-0 MIAC), while Jessica Kniefel went 4-for-7 with three RBI and two runs scored.
A three-run fourth inning enabled St. Catherine to pull away from the Auggies in the first game, as Clark went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. At the top of the order for the Auggies, Castillo and Magnuson had two hits apiece. Sarah Green (SR, Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) struck out three in a complete-game effort for the Auggies.
In the second game, St. Catherine pounded out 15 hits, while Augsburg had 11 hits in the game, including three by Magnuson and two each by Castillo and Jessa Hinz (SO, Richfield, Minn.). Castillo scored twice while Hinz scored three runs. Kylee Persing (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) drove in four runs for the Auggies. Kniefel and Lisa Jacobs had three hits each for the Wildcats, while Kayla Bergeson had two hits and drove in three runs.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a scheduled doubleheader on Saturday (4/4) at 1 p.m. at Gustavus.
