MINNEAPOLIS --
Jessa Hinz (SO, Richfield, Minn.) hit her third career home run, a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning, to give Augsburg College the first-game victory, en route to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Concordia College-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field. Augsburg won 4-3 and 4-1.
Augsburg (4-22 overall, 2-6 MIAC) rallied from a 3-1 deficit with a run in the sixth inning of the first game, as doubles by
Steph Saxe (FY, Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS) and
Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) plated a run. After an inning-opening walk, with one out in the seventh, Hinz hit a homer, her first of the season, to right-center to give the Auggies the walk-off victory.
Magnuson went 4-for-6 for the Auggies in the doubleheader, contributing a double, triple and three RBI while scoring two runs. Saxe went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and
Sabrina Siple (FY, Farmington, Minn.) had two hits and scored twice.
Amanda Schwartz (FY, Becker, Minn.) struck out eight batters for the Auggies in the doubleheader, while
Sarah Green (SR, Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) had three strikeouts in the pitching circle.
Concordia (5-11 overall, 0-2 MIAC), in its first action since March 7 due to the Red River flooding that forced the postponement of eight consecutive conference games, was led by Maddie Haroldson (JR, Sartell, Minn.), who went 3-for-3 with three doubles in the first game, driving in two runs. Kelsey Jones (FY, Billings, Mont./Billings West HS), Emily Jensen (JR, Benson, Minn.) and Amanda Michaelson (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had two hits each for the Cobbers in the doubleheader.
In the second game, Augsburg again rallied from an early deficit, scoring twice in the third inning and twice in the sixth inning. Schwartz hit a two-run single in the third inning, and a two-run triple by Magnuson plated the other Auggie runs in the sixth.
Jones pitched nine innings for the Cobbers in the doubleheader, striking out 10 -- including seven in a complete-game effort in the second game -- while walking three.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Friday (4/10) at 12 p.m., with a doubleheader at Macalester. Concordia is also in action on Friday, with a doubleheader at Hamline at 1 p.m.
