Auggies split with Cobbers

GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

MINNEAPOLIS -- Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had four hits in six at-bats, while stealing her 25th base of the season, leading Augsburg College in a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Concordia College-Moorhead on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg (18-14 overall, 8-6 MIAC) won the first game 8-6, and Concordia (6-23 overall, 3-9 MIAC) won the second game 4-1. The second-game loss was Augsburg's first home loss in its last eight games at Edor Nelson Field.

Dorale went 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in the first game, while going 2-for-2 with walk in the second game, reaching base in five of her seven plate appearances. Going 1-for-2 in stolen-base attempts on Sunday, Dorale is now 25-of-28 in steal attempts this season.

Her 25 stolen bases lead the MIAC in overall statistics by 13 over her nearest pursuer, and she is now third in single-season stolen bases in school history. Tully Kaiser (1996-98, 2000) holds the single-season school record of 37, set in 2000.

Brittney Bruzek (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Jessa Hinz (JR, Richfield, Minn.) had three hits, with a double and RBI each for the Auggies in the doubleheader.

For Concordia, Kesley Jones (SO, Billings, Mont./Billings West HS) and Maddie Haroldson (SR, Sartell, Minn.) had four hits apiece, and Nikki Clouse (FY, Fergus Falls, Minn.) had two hits, including a triple, and three RBI in the doubleheader.

A five-run first inning for the Auggies, as they sent 10 batters to the plate and produced five hits, gave the Auggies the lead for good in the first game. RBI doubles by Bruzek and Laura Strandell (JR, Pine Island, Minn.) and a run-scoring single by #C.J. Rice# (SO, Dayton, Minn./Alexandria HS) were highlights of the inning.

Concordia cut the lead with a three-run third inning, keyed on a two-run double by Kaia Sele (FY, Bemidji, Minn.). The Cobbers added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but Augsburg answered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Dorale.

Two more runs came across for the Auggies in the fifth, as Jennifer Castillo (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) doubled and came around to score, and Kylee Persing (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) drove in Bruzek on a single. The Cobbers loaded the bases and had two run-scoring walks in the top of the seventh inning, but a strikeout and groundout with the bases loaded ended the game.

Pitcher Joelle Link (FY, Hardin, Minn.) proved to be the difference for Concordia in the second game, as she pitched six innings of shutout softball, allowing just one walk and five hits to earn the win. Reliever Jones allowed one run in the seventh. Augsburg had six hits and stranded 10 runners on base in the second game, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Cobbers scored single runs in the second and third inning, and a two-run triple by Clouse gave Concordia a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning. Augsburg's lone run came in the seventh, as a fielder's choice by Castillo plated Marissa Lurken (FY, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS).

Augsburg's Persing struck out five in four innings of work in the second game, with Hannah Askew (SO, Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) pitching three innings of scoreless relief.

Both teams return to MIAC play with home doubleheaders on Tuesday (4/20) at 4 p.m., as Augsburg hosts Gustavus and Concordia hosts Macalester.
