Auggie streak snapped at UST

GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Stephanie Saxe (SO, Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS) hit a solo home run in the first game and Brittney Bruzek (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) hit her conference-leading fifth home run of the season in the second game, but the Augsburg College softball team dropped a doubleheader to the host University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill on Thursday afternoon.

Augsburg (14-10 overall, 4-2 MIAC) saw its nine-game winning streak snapped by St. Thomas (17-5 overall, 4-0 MIAC), falling 8-3 in the first game and 8-5 in the second game.

Saxe opened the scoring for the Auggies with a solo home run, her second round-tripper of the season, in the second inning. But St. Thomas scored eight straight runs -- two in the third inning, four in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning -- before the Auggies scored twice in the top of the seventh. Sammie Wagner (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) drove home Brittany Ranallo (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) on a sacrifice fly, and Allyson Ruedy (FY, Waseca, Minn.) plated Shawna Middleton (FY, Hastings, Minn.) on a single.

In the second game, St. Thomas jumped on the board early, scoring five runs on seven hits while sending nine batters to the plate in the first inning. The Tommies added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames.

Augsburg scored twice in the fourth inning, with both runs coming across following a fielding error, and Bruzek hit a three-run homer in the seventh frame. Bruzek now has a team- and MIAC-leading five home runs, part of her team-best 13 extra-base hits (with a team-high nine doubles). Bruzek is hitting .371 with a team-best 23 RBI and team-leading .700 slugging percentage (third-highest among MIAC players).

Ruedy had three hits in the doubleheader to lead the Auggies, while Jessa Hinz (JR, RIchfield, Minn.) and Jennifer Castillo (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had two hits each.

For St. Thomas, Marta Radcliffe (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) and Kayla Boward (SO, Otsego, Minn./Elk River HS) each went 4-for-5, with Radcliffe hitting a solo home run and Boward hitting two doubles and driving in four runs.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (4/10) at 1 p.m., with a doubleheader at St. Benedict.
