NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- St. Olaf College ended Augsburg College's softball season Sunday afternoon, with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep at the Oles' home field.
St. Olaf (17-19 overall, 14-8 MIAC) secured the final spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs with a 2-1 win in the first game and 8-4 win in the second game.
Augsburg finished its season at 21-19 overall, 11-11 in MIAC play. Augsburg reached the 20-win plateau for the second time in head coach
Tim Gormley's four seasons with the Auggies, and the team's 21 wins are its most since the 1992 season, when it finished 24-12.
In the first game, the Auggies fell victim to a no-hitter thrown by St. Olaf's Katie Truax, who struck out four while walking three. The Oles scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, on RBI doubles by Truax and Kjirsten Speer.
Augsburg's lone run came in the fifth inning, when
Brittney Bruzek (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) walked, and her pinch-runner,
Brittany Ranallo (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) came around to score on a fielder's choice by
Kylee Persing (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS).
Melissa Larsen (SR, Andover, Minn.) pitched a complete-game effort for Augsburg, striking out four while not walking a batter. Just one of the two runs charged to her were earned.
In the second game, a five-run first inning, where the Oles sent 10 runners to the plate, gave the hosts the lead to stay. The Oles built an 8-1 lead before Augsburg scored three runs in the final two innings to trim the lead to its final 8-4 margin.
Allyson Ruedy (FY, Waseca, Minn.) went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Auggies, hitting her first career home run, a solo homer to lead off the second inning. Ruedy scored again in the sixth inning, singling and coming home on a fielding error. In the sixth inning, Bruzek drove in two runs on a double.
Speer, Cara Lemmon and Maggie Scholer had two hits each for the Oles.
