Auggies score sweep of Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Shayna Crandall (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the first game, then pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in the second game, leading the Augsburg College softball team to a sweep of Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Macalester Field.

Crandall struck out six while walking two and allowing just three hits in the opening-game 5-0 win for Augsburg (17-13 overall, 6-6 MIAC). She thenstruck out two while walking two and allowing one hit in the final 3.2 innings of relief in the second-game, 5-4 Auggie win over Macalester (7-19 overall, 0-10 MIAC).

Jennifer Castillo (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) went 5-for-8 at the plate with two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored in the doubleheader for the Auggies, while Allyson Ruedy (SO, Waseca, Minn.) had three hits and drove in three runs, and Bri Dorale (SO, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had three hits and scored two runs.

In the first game, Augsburg struck first in the second inning, as Marissa Lurken (SO, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) singled to drive home Crandall. Two more runs came across in the fifth inning, as Castillo doubled and scored on an RBI triple by Laura Strandell (SR, Pine Island, Minn.), and Strandell scored on a single by Ruedy. RBI singles by Castillo and Kylee Persing (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) plated two more runs in the fifth.

In the second game, Augsburg built a 3-0 lead after two innings. An error and bases-loaded walk plated two runs in the first inning, and a Castillo double drove home Jessa Hinz (SR, Richfield, Minn.) in the second.

Macalester scored four runs in the fourth inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Rebecca McCrory hit a two-run single, and Katie Fuller and Cleo Nagy hit RBI singles. But the Auggies took the lead back in the top of the fifth, as Castillo and Strandell both singled, and both scored on a base hit by Ruedy.

Castillo had two hits in the first game and three hits in the second game. Ruedy had two hits in the first game, and Dorale had two hits in the second game.

Macalester pitchers Meghan Merriman and Amanda Knopf both pitched complete-game efforts, with Merriman striking out two in the first game and Knopf striking out four in the second game.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (4/19) at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader at Hamline.
