MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Bethel University on Thursday evening at Edor Nelson Field, falling 9-2 in the first game and 3-1 in the second game.
Devon Shaut (SO, Merritt Island, Fla.) pitched a complete-game effort for the Auggies (18-19 overall, 7-12 MIAC) in the second game, striking out four while allowing just six hits and four walks.
Meanwhile, two Bethel (21-13 overall, 12-6 MIAC) pitchers threw complete-game victories -- Randi Thompson (SR, Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) in the first game with six strikeouts, and Rebecca Akerson (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) with three strikeouts in the second game.
Both Augsburg runs came on extra-base hits in the first game, as
Laura Strandell (SR, Pine Island, Minn.) drove in
Bri Dorale (SO, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) on a double in the first inning, and
Jessa Hinz (SR, Richfield, Minn.) hit a triple in the third inning to plate
Kelsey Rorabeck (SO, Hudson, Wis./Somerset HS).
The Royals scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead, then scored four runs in the fourth inning on two 2-run homers, from Kelly Berg (SR, South Haven, Minn./Annandale HS) and Megan Matson (SO, Mound, Minn./Orono HS).
In the second game, Bethel scored twice in the first inning, on a two-run double by Rachel Gilbert (SO, Becker, Minn.), but Augsburg cut into the lead in the bottom of the first, as
Jennifer Castillo (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) hit a single to drive home Hinz. Bethel scored an unearned run in the fourth inning following an error to cap the scoring.
Strandell, Dorale, Hinz and
Brittney Bruzek (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had two hits apiece for the Auggies in the doubleheader. Dorale and Castillo had two stolen bases each, as the Auggies stole seven bases in the doubleheader.
For Bethel, Matson went 6-for-7 in the doubleheader -- 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI in the first game and 3-for-4 with a run scored in the second game. Gilbert, Berg and Cristina Masten (FY, Fergus Falls, Minn.) had three hits apiece for the Royals.
Augsburg closes the regular season with three games on the road -- resuming the second game of a doubleheader at Hamline on Friday (4/29) at 4 p.m., and playing a doubleheader at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday (4/30) at 1 p.m.
