SAINT PAUL, Minn.--
Stephanie Saxe (SR, Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS) went 4-for-8 and hit her first home run of the season to lead the Augsburg College softball team to a two-game sweep over conference foe Macalester College Thursday night.
Augsburg (10-14 overall, 3-3 MIAC) won game one of the twinbill 5-4, and earned a two-game sweep of the Scots (14-10 overall, 3-5 MIAC) by winning game two by a score of 9-4.
Saxe, who has reached base eight times in her last 13 at bats, scored three runs and drove in two more to lead the Auggies at the plate on Thursday. Saxe home run was her first of the season, and first in and Augsburg uniform since April 8, 2010.
Game one featured a pitchers dual, as both teams were held scoreless during the first six innings of play. The Auggies struck first, as
Kylee Persing (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored the first run of the game with one out in the top of the seventh to put Augsburg on top by a score of 1-0. Macalester would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame to even the score at 1-1 and send the game to extra innings.
Both teams were scoreless through the 8th and 9th, before the Auggies jumped in front again, scoring four runs in the top of the 10th to take a 5-1 lead. The Scots answered again, scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the 10th, but were unable to get any closer as the winning run was stranded on first base during the games final at bat.
Amanda Eaton (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn.) picked up the win for Augsburg, as she pitched a 10-inning complete game without allowing an earned run. Eaton allowed seven hits, while striking out three and walking two for Augsburg. Eaton's 10-innings pitched are the most an Augsburg pitcher has recorded in a single game since April 5, 2004.
The Auggies used a five-run second inning to jump out to an early lead in game two. Augsburg would add three more runs in the fifth to cruise to a 9-4 win and sweep of the two game series.
Persing went 3-for-7 at the plate with a double and three runs scored, while teammate
Bekka Kelly (FY, Columbia Heights, Minn.) went 3-for-9 with a double and two runs batted in.
Bri Dorale (JR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS),
Kelsey Rorabeck (JR, Hudson, Wis./Somerset HS),
Allyson Ruedy (JR, Waseca, Minn.) and
Brittany Hecker (SO, Saint Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) each recorded two hits for the Auggies during the doubleheader, while Rorabeck scored three runs and drove two more in.
Persing was the pitcher of record for Augsburg in game two, earning the win after throwing a complete game while striking out five and walking one.
Augsburg returns to action tomorrow (4/6) when they travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
