BOXSCORE ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- Another game, another record for Augsburg College women's soccer player
Olivia Muyres (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS).
Four days after setting Augsburg's single-season goal record, Muyres broke the Augsburg record for points in a single season, with a goal in Augsburg's 2-1, overtime loss at the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Muyres' goal came during a flurry of activity in the closing minutes of regulation time. The Blazers took a 1-0 lead on a Piper Murray goal from a Aly Hoffman cross with 2:34 left in the second half. But 25 seconds later, Muyres scored an unassisted goal on a steal off a throw-in, taking a shot from the right side of the box with 2:09 remaining to tie the game for Augsburg (8-3-4 overall, 4-3-1 MIAC).
The goal gives Muyres an MIAC-leading 39 points on the season, breaking the old Augsburg record of 38, set by Kara Seibel (13 goals, 12 assists) in 1995. Muyres leads the MIAC's overall statistics in goals (16) and points (39), while her seven assists are tied for second-most among MIAC players.
In her 53 games in her three seasons at Augsburg, Muyres now has 28 goals and 15 assists for 71 points, ranking fourth in school history in career points, tied for third in career goals and tied for 10th in career assists.
Following Muyres' goal, the game went to overtime, and Taylor Hedin ended it for the Blazers (10-2-1 overall, 6-2-0 MIAC) at the 99:06 mark, scoring the game-winner from Grace Vaughn.
Saturday's game was played in cold and rainy conditions in St. Joseph. St. Benedict claimed a 32-12 advantage in shots in the game, with Augsburg goalkeeper
Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) collecting 14 saves on the day. Heather Kaluzniak had five saves for Saint Benedict.
"Despite the weather it was a great game. Our effort was solid and we had chances to win," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "Although its a tough loss, we are starting to play better now, so I feel good about that."
Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) had four shots for the Auggies in the game, while Muyres had three shots and
Molly Allen (JR, Stillwater, Minn.) and
Abi Rodstein (JR, Eagan, Minn.) had two shots each.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play next Saturday (10/26) at 7 p.m., with a home contest against Gustavus at Edor Nelson Field.
"A week to train before our next game will also help us improve," Navarre said. "It has been a tough stretch on the road. It will be good to get back home vs. Gustavus on Saturday."
