AMES, Iowa--
Micheale Tesema (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) and
Lauren Rice (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Holy Family) each set new school record times in the 5,000-meter run at the Iowa State University Classic Friday evening. Tesema and Rice were the lone Auggie competitors at the meet, which featured over 45 NCAA Division I, II and III competitors.
Tesema, who nearly set a new school record in the 3,000-meter run earlier this season, clocked a time of 15:10.51 on Firday to finish in 12th place at the meet. Tesema's performance bested the previous school record time of 15:14.27 set by Brent Haglund in 2010. As one of the top Augsburg performers this season, Tesema currently holds the fastest time among MIAC competitors in the 5,000-meter and 3,000-meter races this season, while his mile time is ranked fifth among conference foes.
On the women's side,
Lauren Rice also set a new school record in the 5,000-meter run, as she clocked a time of 18:08.76 to finish in 22nd place. Rice, who broke the school record in the 3,000-meter run last weekend, broke the previous 5,000-meter school record time of 18:20.07 set by Rebekah Ormsby during the 1994 season. In just her first season as a member of the Augsburg indoor track and field team, Rice currently holds the fastest 5,000-meter time among MIAC competitors, while her 3,000-meter time is ranked as the third in the conference this season.
Tesema and Rice will join the rest of their Auggie teammates at the University of Minnesota Snowshoe Open this Friday (2/15) in Minneapolis.
