Emily Smith (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) had four hits and scored two runs for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader to visiting St. Mary's University on Thursday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
St. Mary's (9-4 overall, 2-0 MIAC) scored a 13-3 win in the first game over Augsburg (7-13 overall, 0-2 MIAC), in a game shortened to five innings by the NCAA eight-run rule. The Cardinals completed the sweep with a 13-9 win in the nightcap.
Smith went 2-for-3 for the Auggies with a run scored in the first game, then went 2-for-5 with a run scored in the second contest.
Bri Dorale (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and
Sarah Buckner (FY, Duluth, Minn./East HS) each went 3-for-5 with an RBI in the second game for the Auggies, with Dorale scoring a run and Buckner scoring two runs.
Lauren Hurley (FY, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader with two runs scored.
With her 3-for-5 effort, Dorale became Augsburg's career hits leader. Dorale now has 180 career hits, surpassing the old school record of 178, set by Tiffany Magnuson (2006-09). On the season, Dorale is hitting .515 (35-of-68), with a .588 slugging percentage and .548 on-base percentage.
In the first game, St. Mary's claimed the early win with three big innings -- a three-run first inning, a four-run third inning and a six-run fifth inning, holding off an Augsburg three-run rally in the fourth. St. Mary's sent eight batters to the plate in the first and third innings, then sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth.
Nat Boissiere (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Cooper HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Cardinals in the first game, while Micaela Meredith (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Hailey Ohl (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Alex Raske (SO, Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley HS) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Auggies sent eight batters to the plate in the fourth inning to score three runs.
Bekka Kelly (SO, Columbia Heights, Minn.) and
Lindsay Helbach (SO, Amherst, Wis.) each hit run-scoring singles, and
Kelsey Rorabeck (SR, Hudson, Wis./Somerset HS) plated a run on a bases-loaded walk.
The second game was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams combined for 31 hits -- 16 for St. Mary's and 15 for Augsburg. St. Mary's built a 7-0 lead in the first three innings, but the Auggies used a six-run third inning to cut the lead back. The Cardinals scored five runs in the top of the fourth, but Augsburg got two runs back in the bottom of the frame, and the teams exchanged runs in the fifth.
Augsburg sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning to score six runs, keyed by an RBI single by Buckner, a two-run double by
Allyson Ruedy (SR, Waseca, Minn.) and a two-run triple by Kelly.
Christa Blaquiere (JR, Edam, Saskatchewan/H. Hardcastle HS) singled and scored on an error, and Hurley drove in a run on a single in the fourth inning, and a Dorale infield single plated a run in the fifth.
Kristen Thelen (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had two doubles and went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI in the second game for the Cardinals, while Boissiere went 4-for-5 with three runs driven in and a run scored. Paige Carter (SR, Rosemount, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, Ohl went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Raske hit a solo home run and drove in three runs in the game.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Friday (3/29) at 12 p.m., hosting Carleton at Edor Nelson Field.
