Bri Dorale (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) went 5-for-6 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, leading the Augsburg College softball team in a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Thursday afternoon at the Vadnais Sports Center.
Augsburg (3-5 overall) was edged 6-5 in the first game by Wisconsin-River Falls (7-1 overall), while the Auggies fell 12-1 in the second game, shortened to five innings by the NCAA's eight-run rule.
Three Auggies had two hits each in the doubleheader, with each hitting a double --
Sarah Buckner (FY, Duluth, Minn./East HS),
Emily Smith (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and
Lauren Hurley (FY, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS).
Amanda Eaton (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) pitched the bulk of innings for the Auggies on Thursday, striking out five while walking one in 8.2 innings of work.
The Auggies fell victim to a UW-River Falls squad that pounded out 23 hits, including five home runs and five doubles, in the doubleheader. The Falcons hit three home runs in the first game and two in the second game.
Ashley Goettl (SR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) hit two home runs and drove in four runs in the doubleheader for the Falcons, while Abbie Morris (SO, Woodbury, Minn.) went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with three runs scored, a homer and four RBI. Sarah Bolen (JR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Lily Buckley (JR, Menomonie, Wis.) each went 3-for-6, with Buckley claiming two doubles, a homer and three RBI, and Bohlen claiming a double and homer.
Trailing 3-0 after two innings in the first game, the Auggies staged a pair of comebacks, the first one with a two-run second inning.
Allyson Ruedy (SR, Waseca, Minn.) stroked a run-scoring triple, then scored on an RBI double by Smith. The Falcons scored a run in the bottom of the third, but the Auggies trimmed the lead again in the fourth, when a single by Dorale plated
Devon Shaut (JR, Merritt Island, Fla.).
UW-River Falls scored twice on a homer in the fifth, but Augsburg scored twice in the top of the sixth, as back-to-back ground-rule doubles by Hurley and Buckner plated a run, and Buckner eventually came around to score on a double play.
Eaton pitched four innings for the Auggies, claiming a strikeout, while Shaut pitched two innings of relief, with a strikeout. Morris claimed the pitching win for the Falcons, striking out five while walking one, with Andrea Krause (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) notching the save with three innings of relief.
In the second game, the Falcons claimed 15 hits, scoring three runs in the first inning, one in the second and eight in the fifth inning to enable the game to be ended early.
Augsburg's lone run in the second game came in the bottom of the fifth, when
Christa Blaquiere (JR, Edam, Saskatchewan/H. Hardcastle HS) singled and eventually came around to score on a fielding error following a single by
Mary Hildestad (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.).
Augsburg is now idle until the week of March 16-21, when it will spend its spring break week with 10 contests at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
