Auggies split with Blazers

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 ROSEMOUNT, Minn. -- Lindsay Helbach (SO, Amherst, Wis.) drove in the eventual game-winning run with a double in the seventh inning of the first game, then stroked a two-run home run in the second game, as her Augsburg College softball team claimed a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with the College of St. Benedict late Friday night at the Irish Sports Dome.

Augsburg (10-20 overall, 3-9 MIAC) claimed a 4-3 victory over St. Benedict (15-11 overall, 4-6 MIAC) in the first game of the doubleheader, but St. Benedict claimed a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

Helbach went 2-for-4 for the Auggies in each game, driving in a run in the first contest and driving in two runs and scoring a run in the second game.

Amanda Eaton (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) pitched a complete-game victory for the Auggies in the first game, striking out 10 while walking four and allowing six hits. She threw 133 pitches in the first game, with 84 strikes. Eaton also pitched two-thirds of an inning of relief in the second game.

After giving up a run in the first inning of the first game, Augsburg tied the game in the third inning, when Bri Dorale (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) singled and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Lauren Hurley (FY, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS). The Auggies took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning, when Allyson Ruedy (SR, Waseca, Minn.) and Bekka Kelly (SO, Columbia Heights, Minn.) scored following a Dorale single.

The Blazers tied the game at 3-3 on a two-run single by Stacy Svihel in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Augsburg took the lead again in the seventh. Ruedy led off the seventh inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dorale. Helbach then hit a double to right-center to bring Ruedy home.

Dorale went 3-for-3 in the first game, while Ruedy went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

In the second game, the Blazers built a 7-0 lead after six innings, before Augsburg scored its lone runs of the game on Helbach's two-run homer in the top of the seventh.

St. Benedict scored four runs in the third inning, with Emily Engelmeier stroking a two-run single, Sarah Walch hitting an RBI single and Nicole Nelson claiming an RBI on a fielder's choice. 
The Blazers scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, as Kimberly Lidstone stroked an RBI single, Sarah Roehl plating a run on a groundout and Svihel hitting a solo home run.

Olivia Boerschinger (SO, Neenah, Wis.) pitched 5.1 innings for the Auggies, while Rachel Nelson had eight strikeouts against one walk in a complete-game win for St. Benedict.

Christa Blaquiere (SO, Edam, Saskatchewan/H. Hardcastle HS) went 2-for-3 for the Auggies in the second game. Lidstone and Svihel had three hits each in the second game for St. Benedict.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (4/20) at 2:30 p.m., hosting Hamline in a doubleheader at Edor Nelson Field.
