Lindsay Helbach (SO, Amherst, Wis.) went 5-for-7 at the plate with three RBI, including a solo home run in the first game, for Augsburg College in its doubleheader loss to Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball action on Thursday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Bethel (17-11 overall, 8-4 MIAC) scored an 8-5, come-from-behind win over Augsburg (10-24 overall, 3-13 MIAC) in the first game, then claimed a 16-6 win in the second game. The Royals claimed a 25-17 advantage in hits in the doubleheader.
Helbach went 4-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI in the first game, then stroked an RBI single in the second game.
Allyson Ruedy (SR, Waseca, Minn.),
Mary Hildestad (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Bri Dorale (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had three hits each for the Auggies in the doubleheader, with Dorale claiming a double in each game while scoring three runs and driving in three runs.
Helbach now has a team-high three home runs on the season for the Auggies. Dorale's .514 batting average this season is second-best among MIAC players in overall statistics, while her 56 hits are the most among conference players. Dorale is also one of just two MIAC players to have above-.500 marks in batting average (.514), on-base percentage (.551) and slugging percentage (.596).
Bethel's Jess Newstrom (SR, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) went 6-for-9 in the doubleheader with three home runs and a double, driving in 12 runs on the day. She had two two-run homers and drove in five runs in the first game, then went 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, driving in seven runs, in the second game. Angie Jackson (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) also went 6-for-9, scoring six runs and collecting a double, in the doubleheader, while Rachel Gilbert (SR, Becker, Minn.) went 5-for-7 with six runs scored, a double, home run and three RBI in the doubleheader. Megan Matson (SR, Mound, Minn./Orono HS) had four hits in the doubleheader, driving in two runs.
The Auggies scored the first three runs of the first game and led 5-2 after four innings, but Bethel scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to claim the victory. Dorale stroked a two-run double in the second inning, and Helbach drove home the next two runs, with a solo homer in the third and an RBI single in the fourth. Newstrom had a two-run homer in the third inning and another two-run homer in the fifth inning for the Royals.
Gilbert stroked a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game for the Royals, part of a four-run frame. Augsburg cut into the lead with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the inning, but the Royals scored three more runs in the second inning, with Newstrom's two-run single the key hits. But Augsburg scored four runs in the bottom of the second, with Dorale driving in a run on a double, Helbach plating a run on a single, and Hildestad collecting a two-run single.
The Royals scored three runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and four runs in the seventh, with Newstrom stroking a three-run homer for her third round-tripper of the evening. Karli Persson (FY, Albany, Minn.) picked up the pitching wins for the Royals in both games, pitching a complete-game win in the first game and pitching 5.2 innings of relief in the second game. Augsburg used four pitchers in the doubleheader.
Augsburg closes the home portion of its season on Friday (4/26) at 3:30 p.m., hosting Gustavus at Edor Nelson Field. The games will be the final home appearances for four Auggie seniors -- Ruedy, Dorale, Hildestad and
Kelsey Rorabeck (SR, Hudson, Wis./Somerset HS).
