BOXSCORE 2 MINNEAPOLIS --
Lindsay Helbach (SO, Amherst, Wis.) went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double, leading the Augsburg College softball team in a doubleheader loss to Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
Gustavus (9-10 overall, 6-2 MIAC) won the first game 8-0 over Augsburg (10-26 overall, 3-15 MIAC) in a game shortened to six innings by the NCAA eight-run rule. The Gusties completed the sweep with a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
Helbach went 3-for-3 with a double in the second game, moving her closer to the .400 batting average mark for the season. Helbach is now hitting .397 (31-for-78), the second-best batting average on the team.
Bri Dorale (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) kept her average above the .500 mark with a 2-for-6 effort in the doubleheader, scoring the lone run for the Auggies in the second game on a wild pitch in the first inning. Dorale is hitting .504 (58-of-115), ranking second among MIAC players in overall statistics in batting average while ranking second in hits. She is one of just two MIAC players to be .500 or better in all three average categories -- batting average (.504), on-base percentage (.540) and slugging percentage (.583).
Augsburg was limited to just seven hits by the Gusties in the doubleheader -- three hits in the first game and four hits in the second game.
Lauren Hurley (FY, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) and
Brittany Hecker (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) had the other hits for the Auggies, both in the first game. The Gusties collected 16 hits in the doubleheader.
A five-run first inning gave the Gusties the lead in the first game, as leadoff hitter Shelby Nosan (SO, Baudette, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) hit a home run, Kailey Morgan (SO, Mound, Minn./Orono HS) hit a two-run homer, and Kat Dahl (JR, Luverne, Minn.) and Jessica Williams (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) each hit RBI singles. Kate Rentschler (SR, Lakefield, Minn./Jackson County Central HS) hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Williams picked up the pitching win for the Gusties with a complete-game effort in the first game, striking out two. Rentschler struck out three in six innings of work to score the win in the second game.
Augsburg took the early lead in the second game, as Dorale led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and came around to score on two wild pitches. But the Gusties scored two runs to go ahead in the fourth inning, then scored two more runs in the sixth and five runs in the seventh to build the lead.
The doubleheader was the final home appearance at Edor Nelson Field for four Auggie seniors -- Dorale,
Mary Hildestad (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.),
Kelsey Rorabeck (SR, Hudson, Wis./Somerset HS) and
Allyson Ruedy (SR, Waseca, Minn.).
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (4/27) at 1 p.m., with a doubleheader at St. Catherine.
