Augsburg opens lacrosse season with 2 wins

MINNEAPOLIS -- The debut for Minnesota's first collegiate varsity women's lacrosse team was a positive one on Saturday evening, as Augsburg College gained two victories in its first two games on home turf, a 12-10 win over Midland University (Neb.) and an 11-8 triumph over the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at Edor Nelson Field.

Abi Rodstein (SO, Eagan, Minn.) scored eight goals in the two games to lead the Auggies, while Shelby Brion (FY, Clearwater, Minn./Monticello HS) had six goals and three assists, Shelby Franklin (FY, Chaska, Minn.) had four goals and an assist, and Rachel Frantz (FY, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) had three goals and two assists. Goalie Ashley Eliason (FY, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) claimed 26 saves in picking up the two victories.

Augsburg will complete its inaugural weekend of action on Sunday (2/23), taking on Loras College (Iowa) at 2 p.m. There will be two other games at Edor Nelson Field on Sunday, as Midland will face Dubuque at 12 p.m., and Midland will face Loras at 4 p.m.

Augsburg scored the first five goals of its first-ever collegiate varsity contest and led 7-5 at halftime, but Midland rallied back to tie the game at 8-8 before the Auggies scored four of the last six goals of the game in the final 8:07 of play.

Rodstein scored four goals in the game, including two goals in the final 8:07 stretch. Brion scored four goals and added an assist, including three goals in the opening five-goal stretch for the Auggies.

Franklin scored Augsburg's first-ever goal, 36 seconds into the game, and added another goal and an assist for a three-point performance. Frantz had a goal and an assist, Natalie Shaw (FY, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) and Dezera Sieracki (FY, Wyoming, Minn./Central HS) added assists, and defender Lexi Halvorson (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored a goal to put the Auggies ahead to stay at 10-9, with 7:31 left in the game.

Rylee Moore-Ryberg (SR, Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County HS) scored three goals and added an assist for Midland, while Sarah Hill (SO, Roseville, Minn.) and Ari Traynor (SO, Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart HS) scored two goals each. Elise Hubel (JR, Chambers, Neb.) and Brianna Quandt (SR, Pueblo, Colo./County HS) had a goal and assist each. Audrey Lutkin (JR, Aurora, Colo.) had the other Midland goal.

Midland outshot Augsburg by a 26-23 margin. Eliason had 12 saves for the Auggies, while Lauren Burkey (SR, Ft. Calhoun, Neb.) had five saves for the Warriors.

Augsburg trailed early in the back-and-forth game, but three goals in the final 2:58 of the first half gave the Auggies a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way, en route to the 11-8 victory.

Rodstein again had four goals to lead the Auggies, including three goals in the first half. Brion scored two goals and added two assists, while Frantz had two goals and an assist, Franklin scored two goals, and Sieracki added a goal. Shaw added an assist for the Auggies.

Judy Borah (JR, Mammoth Lakes, Calif./Pacific Palisades HS) had four goals for Dubuque, while Bridget Schirmers (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored three goals, Nicole Pacheco (SO, Addison, Ill./Addison Trail HS) scored a goal, and Robyn Wittkopf (FY, Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead HS) had an assist. 

Eliason was again sharp in goal for Augsburg, collecting 14 saves, including several close attempts on free-position shots. Augsburg outshot Dubuque by a 37-28 margin. Natalie Cukale (FY, Aurora, Colo./Gateway HS) had nine saves in the first half for Dubuque, while Danielle Williams (SO, Mukwonago, Wis.) had nine saves in the second half.
