Auggies improve to 3-0 with 20-5 win over Loras

MINNEAPOLIS -- With six players recording multiple-goal performances, the Augsburg College women's lacrosse team completed its inaugural weekend of varsity action with a perfect 3-0 record, capped with a 20-5 win over Loras College (Iowa) on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Shelby Brion (FY, Clearwater, Minn./Monticello HS) scored five goals and added an assist for a six-point game, while Abi Rodstein (SO, Eagan, Minn.) had a four-goal effort for the third game in a row, adding an assist for a five-point performance. Through the first three games of the season, Rodstein and Brion have already reached double-digit totals in both goals and points, with Rodstein leading the way with 12 goals and an assist for 13 points, and Brion recording 11 goals and four assists for 15 points.

Making her collegiate lacrosse debut on Sunday, Kayla Fuechtmann (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) scored four goals for Augsburg, while Shelby Franklin (FY, Chaska, Minn.) scored three goals with an assist for a four-point effort. Natalie Shaw (FY, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) scored two goals with an assist, Rachel Frantz (FY, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) scored two goals and Dezera Sieracki (FY, Wyoming, Minn./Centennial HS) had an assist.

On the weekend, Augsburg outscored its three opponents by a 43-23 margin and outshot its opponents by a 106-63 margin. The Auggies also collected 43 draw controls, compared to 30 for their opponents.

Kaitlyn Kutsch (SO, Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic HS) scored four goals for Loras (0-1), while Anna Schwalbe (FY, Kenosha, Wis./Tremper HS) had a goal and Karli Jonasen (SR, Allis, Wis./West Allis HS) collected an assist.

Augsburg outshot Loras by a 46-9 margin in the game, including a 22-2 advantage in the second half. Augsburg also recorded 22 draw controls, compared to Loras five, and converted on nine of 10 clear opportunities.

Augsburg jumped out to a big lead in the first half, scoring five of the first six goals of the game in the opening 12:22 of play, eventually taking a 10-4 lead at halftime. Brion scored all five of her goals in the first half. 

The Auggies expanded the lead further in the second half, scoring seven straight goals in the first 10:50 of the second half to expand the lead to 17-4. Fuechtmann scored all four of her goals in the second half, while Rodstein scored two goals in each half.

Goalie Ashley Eliason (FY, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had three saves to pick up the win for the Auggies, while Claire Sheehan (FY, Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley HS) had 13 saves for Loras.

Midland University (Neb.) claimed two wins in the Edor Nelson Field dome on Sunday, topping the University of Dubuque (Iowa) 23-10 in its first game and Loras 20-8 in the final game of the day.

Augsburg will now play the remainder of its schedule -- 10 games -- against varsity opponents on the road in three different weekends of action, before returning home in April with three exhibition games against club opponents. Augsburg's first weekend on the road is to Texas next weekend. The Auggies will play at Southwestern University on Friday (2/28) at 5 p.m., will face Colorado College at the University of Dallas on Saturday (3/1) at 1 p.m., and will face the University of Dallas on Sunday (3/2) at 10 a.m.

Like Augsburg, Southwestern is in its first year as a varsity program and has opened its season with two wins, outscoring its opponents by a 38-6 margin. Colorado College is in its 20th season as a varsity program, and is 0-1 going into its weekend of three games in Texas. The Tigers were 7-10 last season. The University of Dallas is in its fifth season as a varsity program, and is currently 1-1 on the season. The Crusaders were 1-12 last season.
