TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Augsburg College softball team went 3-7 in its 10 games at the Tucson Invitational Games (TIG) in Tuscon, Ariz., during Spring Break week.

THURSDAY, MARCH 20
Augsburg 5, Grinnel 1 -- BOXSCORE

Augsburg picked up their third win of the trip with some timely hitting against Grinnel on Thursday afternoon in Tucson, Ariz. Lindsay Helbach was responsible for two of the five runs as she led the Auggies with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Sarah Buckner and Bekka Kelly both had two hit days going 2-for-4, while Buckner also had an RBI and Kelly came around to score on both her hits. Augsburg spread out its scoring with one run in the first, two in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth inning. Emily Smith, Devon Shaut and Jenna Orth each had singles with Orth and Shaut also scoring a run.  

Olivia Boerschinger earned her second win of the season tosing four innings, surrending four runs (one earned) on seven hits, a walk and a strikeout. The Auggie defense was solid, only committing two errors with 21 putouts. 

Augsburg 3, Denison 4 -- BOXSCORE

The Auggies lost to Denison by one run for the second time this week, this time it took extra innings for the Big Red get the win. Bekka Kelly and Emily Smith had two hits apiece with Kelly adding an RBI, while Jenna Orth went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Lauren Hurley and Ashley Anfinson went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Auggies. 

Denison put two runs up quickly in the bottom of the first to take the lead, but the Auggies answered with three runs in the top of the third. No team would plate a run until the bottom of the fifth when a sacrifice fly for the Big Red tied the ballgame. Jenna Orth led off with a single for the Auggies in the top of the seventh. She would advance to third on Kelly's sacrifice bunt and Smith's groundout but Helbach struck out to leave the winning run on third. Extra innings place a runner on second and Denison took advantage with a sacrifice bunt followed by a single to the shortstop to bring home the winning run. 

Olivia Boerschinger pitched a solid going for 7.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) with a strikeout and a walk. 

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19 
Augsburg 2, La Verne 4 -- BOXSCORE

Devon Shaut stroked a double and had an RBI for the Auggies, who couldn't quite rally past La Verne and lost 4-2. Sarah Buckner went 1-for-2 with a walk, while Lindsay Helbach went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Bekka Kelly went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Jenna Orth also had one hit.

All the run scoring was done early in this game as there was only two hits and one run recorded in the last three innnings for both sides. The Auggies scored two runs on three hits and one error in the bottom of the first as Lindsay Helbach singled, Lauren Hurley reached on an error by the right fielder. Then, after Sarah Buckner grounded out, Bekka Kelly singled in the games first run, then Devon Shaut doubled to bring around Hurley and the Auggies took a 2-0 lead. La Verne answered with three runs in the in the third andone more in the fifth to earn the victory. 
 
Augsburg 0, Central (5 inn.) -- BOXSCORE

Brie Haycraft threw a three-hit shutout for the No. 4 ranked Central Dutchmen. Bekka Kelly recorded two of those hits, while Brenna Nakonechny picked up the other one. Haycraft was pitching to contact though as only two Auggies struckout, but the Dutchmen were solid defensively with 15 putouts.  

Two bad innings doomed the Auggies in this one, as Central scored four runs on four hits in the second and six runs on six hits and two Auggie miscues in the fourth. Olivia Boerschinger was handed the loss, pitching 3.1 innings of work and giving up 12 hits, 8 earned runs.


MONDAY, MARCH 17

Augsburg 2, Claremont Mudd-Scripps 10 (5 inn.) -- BOXSCORE

Lindsay Helbach had another multiple hit game with two singles, while Devon Shaut finished 1-for-2 with a double, and Bekka Kelly went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Others picking up singles for the Auggies were Emily Smith, Lauren Hurley and Brenna Nakonechny. Olivia Boerschinger got the start for Augsburg and pitched four innings, giving up eight hits and six earned runs in a losing effort.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. Both team's bats were held at bay for the next two innings with a total of three hits and one run scored. The fifth inning proved to be more exciting with the score now 5-0, Augsburg scored two runs on three hits to cut the lead to three, but the Athenas broke out in the bottom of the fifth scoring five runs on six hits to get the win.
 
Augsburg 13, Crown 8 (8 inn.) -- BOXSCORE

Augsburg rallied in the eighth innning with seven runs to break open the extra inning contest and secure the win. Crown tried to make a rally of their own but fell short with two runs and one hit in bottom of the eighth. Olivia Boerschinger picked up the win pitching 2.1 innings of relief work, while only surrendering three hits and two earned runs. Amanda Eaton started for the Auggies, going 5.2 innings allowing 10 hits and three earned runs.

The Auggies bats stayed hot, -- after scoring 10 runs yesterday -- scoring 13 runs on 13 hits with two doubles and a triple. Lindsay Helbach, Lauren Hurley, Mindy Nguyen (SO, Austin, Minn./Pacelli HS) and Devon Shaut had two hits apiece, while Sarah Buckner had three RBI. Bekka Kelly and Helbach each had two RBI to help the Auggies earn their second victory of the year. 


SUNDAY, MARCH 16 
UW-Eau Claire 18, Augsburg 10 (6 inn.) -- BOXSCORE

Augsburg second game of the day proved to be a hit parade, with the Auggies belting out nine hits and the Blugolds with 16. Augsburg took the early lead with four runs on four hits through one and a half innings. UW Eau-Claire's bats came alive in the bottom of the second as they exploded for nine runs on six hits and two Auggie miscues. Augsburg battled back with a big inning of their own in the third with five runs on three hits. The bats cooled down for both teams until the sixth when the Blugolds plated five on four hits and four Augsburg errors.

Lindsay Helbach (JR, Amherst, Wis.) led the Augsburg offensive explosion with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBI. Sarah Buckner (SO, Duluth Minn./East HS) also had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-3, with a walk and two RBI, while Lauren Hurley (SO, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Bekka Kelly (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks, while Jenna Orth also went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. 

Denison 5, Augsburg 4 -- BOXSCORE

The Auggies dropped a close game to the Big Red from Denison Sunday afternoon. In a game that saw Augsburg with an early lead, Denison rally to tie, then take a two run lead into the seventh, only to have Augsburg rally back and tie the game at 4-4. It came down to the bottom of the seventh with two outs and the bases loaded. Denison's Heather Larsen was hit by the pitch, which brought the winning run home. Augsburg capitalized on five Denison errors throughout the game, while Augsburg's only error of the game came in the seventh inning, and proved to be costly. 

Sarah Buckner (SO, Duluth Minn./East HS) and Devon Shaut (SR, Merritt Island, Fla.) led the Auggies at the plate, each picking up two hits. Amanda Niznik (FY, Columbia Heights, Minn.) pinch hit for shortstop Jenna Orth (FY, Melrose, Minn.) in the seventh inning with two outs and the Auggies trailing by two. Niznik came through in the clutch with a hit that plated two runs to tie the game. 

Olivia Boerschinger was dealt the loss after pitching 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs (four earned), three walks and three strikeouts. 

SATURDAY, MARCH 15 
Augsburg 0, Alfred 18 (5 inn.) -- BOXSCORE

Augsburg was shutout in their second game of the day as they ran into some hot bats and were cold at the plate picking up four hits. Alfred scored 18 runs on 17 hits in five innings to earn the win. Bekka Kelly (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) went 2-for-2, while Brittany Hecker (SR, St. Paul, MInn./Como Park HS) and Christa Blaquiere (JR, Edam, Saskatchewan/H. Hardcastle HS) each went 1-for-2. 

Augsburg 3, Marian 0 -- BOXSCORE

Augsburg kicked off their annual spring trip with a win, claiming a 3-0 victory in seven innings against Marian University Saturday morning. 

Amanda Eaton (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) threw a complete game shutout, surrendering eight hits and striking out five, to pickup her first victory of the year. Lindsay Helbach (JR, Amherst, Wis.) had a great day at the dish for the Auggies, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Ashley Anfinson (FY, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) also had a multiple hit day as she went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Augsburg's three RBI came from Lauren Hurley (SO, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS), Bekka Kelly (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) and Sarah Buckner (SO, Duluth, Minn./East HS) as they each had one RBI on one hit. 

The Auggies collected 12 hits in the game, scoring once in the second, third and fifth innings, while stranding eight runners. Marian couldn't get a run across, finishing with eight hits and 10 runners left on base.
