Auggies sweep Carleton

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 MINNEAPOLIS -- Lauren Torborg (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn/Park Center HS) went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader, including a 4-for-4 effort with a double, a home run and an RBI in the second game, leading the Augsburg College softball team to a sweep of Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg (6-24 overall, 3-9 MIAC) won the first game 4-1, and the second 3-2 behind a walk-off RBI single by Emily Smith (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the second game, Torborg homered to left center to break a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the second, but the Knights answered in the top of the third after an errant throw from Buckner on a stolen base went into center field and Jenny Ramey scored. Torborg led off the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Smith. Sarah Buckner (SO, Duluth, Minn./East HS) had a bunt single to advance Torborg to third and Lauren Hurley (SO, Arden Hills, Minn/Mounds View HS) singled to bring home the Auggies' second run of the game.

Carleton tied the game again in the sixth on one hit and two Augsburg errors. Pitcher Olivia Boerschinger (JR, Neenah, Wis.) was able to strand two more runners, then sit down the Knights in order in the seventh. Jenna Orth (FY, Melrose, Minn.) led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single. Lindsay Helbach (JR, Amherst, Wis.) flied out to right field, then Torborg doubled to right field and Orth was held at third to set the stage for Smith. With one out, and the winning run on third base, Smith stepped up and smacked the first pitch up the middle for the walk-off single.

Hurley went 2-for-3 in game two with an RBI, while Helbach went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Torborg went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Boerschinger pitched all 14 innings of the doubleheader. In game two, she scattered six hits, one walk, allowing one earned run. She picked up three strikeouts in the first game, again allowing just one earned run on seven hits.

Smith's hot bat got started in the first game, when she went 2-for-3 and scored a run. No other Auggie had multiple hits in game one, but four others ended with one hit. Buckner went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and one run, while Amanda Niznik (FY, Columbia Heights, Minn.) and Hurley each had big pinch-hit at-bats and came through with a hit and RBI.

After giving up a run in the first inning, the Auggies tied the game in the fifth, when Brenna Nakonechny () walked and eventually came around to score on Hurley's pinch-hit RBI single. The Auggies scored three runs in the sixth inning. Buckner hit a two-run double to drive home Torborg and Smith, then came around to score on an RBI single by Niznik.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (4/15) at 5 p.m., hosting Bethel at Edor Nelson Field.
