Auggie softball splits with Bethel

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 MINNEAPOLIS -- Pitcher Olivia Boerschinger (JR, Neenah, Wis.) helped her own cause with a huge two out, two RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to give Augsburg the lead 4-2. Boerschinger then allowed just two hits in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning, leading Augsburg (7-25 overall, 4-10 MIAC) to the game two victory against the visiting Bethel Royals (14-11 overall, 5-3 MIAC). The Auggies lost game one 12-1, but with the 4-2 win in game two, earned the split in Minnesota Intercolliegate Athletic Conference action on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg's first two runs of the second game came in the third inning, when Lindsay Helbach (JR, Amherst, Wis.) doubled off the fence in right-center with two outs bringing home Ashley Anfinson (FY, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS), who reached on a throwing error by reigning MIAC MVP Angie Jackson, and Bekka Kelly (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.), who had singled earlier.

Boerschinger collected her fifth win of the season scattering six hits and allowing two runs in seven innings of work. Karli Persson was handed the loss, just her third of the season as she threw four innings, giving up all four Augsburg runs and scattering five hits.

Sarah Buckner (SO, Duluth, Minn./East HS) finished game two as the only Auggie with a multiple hit game going 2-for-3 and scoring one run, while four others reached base with a hit.

Augsburg was plagued by fielding errors in game one as Amanda Eaton (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) threw five innings surrendering just four hits, but four walks combined with four errors at the wrong time, including three in a row in the sixth inning, proved to be too much for the Auggies to overcome. Eaton allowed seven runs in her five innings of work, but none of them were earned. Devon Shaut (SR, Merritt Island, Fla.) pitched 1.2 innings of relief work, giving up two walks and allowing five runs.

Emily Smith (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) stayed hot going 1-for-3 in both games and recording Augsburg's lone RBI in game one. Others picking up hits for the Auggies in the doubleheader were Jenna Orth (FY, Melrose, Minn.), Brittany Hecker (SR, St.Paul, Minn./Como Park HS), Lauren Torborg (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS), and Bekka Kelly (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.), who each recorded one hit on the day. Orth also recorded a stolen base and improved her on-base percentage by earning two free passes with great at-bats.
