BOXSCORE 2 MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College softball team ended its season with a pair of losses in a doubleheader to the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
St. Thomas (31-5 overall, 19-1 MIAC), ranked No. 16 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III national poll, claimed a 5-0 win over Augsburg (10-30 overall, 7-15 MIAC) in the first game and a 10-0 win in the second game, shortened to six innings via the NCAA eight-run rule.
Olivia Boerschinger (SR, Neenah, Wis.), one of six seniors playing in their final doubleheader for the Auggies, pitched a complete-game effort in the first game, striking out two while walking three and allowing five hits. Just two of the five runs charged to her were earned in the first game, as the Auggies committed four errors.
The Tommies scored a run in the first inning, then expanded the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Brenna Walek hit a solo home run, and two more runs came across later in the inning following an error. An RBI single by Kristen Bigelbach capped the scoring in the fifth.
Emily Smith (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) hit a double for the Auggies in the first game, and
Sarah Buckner (SO, Duluth, Minn./East HS),
Brittany Hecker (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS), and
Jenna Orth (FY, Melrose, Minn.) each hit singles for Augsburg.
Kendra Bowe struck out five in a complete-game effort for St. Thomas in the first game. Bianca Peterson had two hits in the game for the Tommies.
The Tommies broke open the second game with four-run frames in both the third and sixth innings, sending nine batters to the plate each time. Peterson hit a solo homer in the first inning for the Tommies, and Walek, Tisa Phinney, Maggie Briesemeister and Erin Mussett each hit doubles. Briesemeister went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Tommies, while Peterson, Bigelbach, Phinney, Emily Gregory and Meg DuPuis had two hits each. Gregory, Bigelbach and Walek each had two RBI.
Augsburg had just one hit in the second game, a single by
Bekka Kelly (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) in the fourth inning.
Amanda Eaton (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) threw 5.2 innings for the Auggies, with Kelly finishing the final third of an inning.
Annie Boyer pitched five innings for the Tommies, striking out one, with Breezy Bannon pitching an inning of scoreless relief with a strikeout.
The doubleheader marked the final collegiate contests for six Augsburg seniors -- Boerschinger, Smith, Hecker, Eaton,
Christa Blaquiere (SR, Edam, Saskatchewan/H. Hardcastle HS) and
Devon Shaut (SR, Merritt Island, Fla.).
