Occidental sweeps Auggies

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 | BOXSCORE 3 | BOXSCORE 4 LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Augsburg College softball team has traveled to California for spring break this year, and opened competition Saturday at St. Katherine, followed by a doubleheader with Occidental on Sunday afternoon. As we await results from their doubleheader against St. Katherine, the following is a recap of the Auggies matchup with Occidental. 

THE BASICS
GAME SCORES: Occidental 6, Augsburg 3; Occidental 2, Augsburg 0
LOCATION: Bell Softball Field, Los Angeles, Calif.
RECORDS: Augsburg 2-6 overall, Occidental 5-13 overall

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggies struck first, scoring once in the first inning then again in the third to take a 2-0 lead.
• The Tigers rallied in the bottom of the third scoring four runs on six hits and one error to take a 4-2 lead. The Auggies mustered one more run in the sixth, but surrendered two in the bottom half of the sixth. 
• Augsburg finished with six hits in the game, while Occidental finished with ten.
• Bekka Kelly (SR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) led Augsburg offensively with two hits and a walk, while Lauren Torborg (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. 
• Lindsay Helbach (SR, Amherst, Wis.) had a strikeout, and surrendered three earned runs in six innings of pitching for the Auggies.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Occidental scored one run in the first, and added another in the fourth to earn the 2-0 victory in the second game against the Auggies.

• Augsburg was held to three hits -- a single by Kelly in the top of the second, a Torborg single to center field in the third, and another single to center by Brianna Cline (St. Claire, Minn.).
• Courtney Larsen (FY, Little Canada, Minn./Concordia Academy) pitched 4 innings for the Auggies, striking out one while walking three.
• Helbach pitched two shutout innings of relief work striking out one.

FOR THE FOES
• Three Occidental pitchers -- Megan Maher, Dallas Boyce, Olivia Thayer -- combined for 14 innings without an earned run. 
• Alex Battest led the Tigers at the plate going 3-for-5 with three RBIs on the day. 


UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to Thousand Oaks, Calif. for a doubleheader with California Lutheran University starting at 2 p.m. on Monday (3/16).
