Auggies drop a pair in California

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The Augsburg College softball team dropped two games against Cal Lutheran on Monday afternoon at Hutton Field in California. 

THE BASICS
GAME SCORES: Cal Lutheran 7, Augsburg 1; Cal Lutheran 7, Augsburg 5
LOCATION: Hutton Field, Thousand Oaks, Calif.
RECORDS: Augsburg 2-8 overall, Cal Lutheran 12-11 overall

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Regals broke a scoreless game open in the third inning with an RBI single, triple and double on consecutive at bats to take a 3-0 lead.
• The Auggies scored one in the seventh when Jenna Orth (JR, Melrose, Minn.) grounded out with one out and the bases loaded to score Brenna Nakonechny (JR, Grand Froks, N.D./Red River HS) and avoid being shutout.
• Augsburg finished with four hits in the game, but put the ball in play often only striking out once. 
• Cal Lutheran recorded 11 hits and struckout three times. .
Meghan Springborn (FY, Oakdale, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) led Augsburg offensively going 2-for-3, while Orth and Bekka Kelly (SR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) both went 1-for-3.
Lindsay Helbach (SR, Amherst, Wis.) recorded three strikeouts, and surrendered four earned runs in 5.2 innings of work for the Auggies. 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggie bats came alive in game two as they scored in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings on their way to five runs.
• Cal Lutheran remained hot at the plate and opened up a 4-0 lead after the first inning. The Regals followed it up with two runs in the second and one in the sixth.  

• Augsburg broke out with 10 hits, while Cal Lutheran finished with nine. 
Taylor Mattice (FY, Woodbury, Minn./Centennial) led Augsburg by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Helbach went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Lauren Torborg (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. 

FOR THE FOES
• Olivia Leyva and Amanda Lewis each finished with four hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader. 
• Shonna Chistianson threw all seven innings in game one, recording no strikeouts, but surrendered no walks, and scattered four hits while allowing just one earned run. 


UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels back to Los Angeles, Calif. for a doubleheader with Grinnell College starting at 12 p.m. on Wednesday (3/18).
