Auggies swept by Lions

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The Augsburg College softball team was swept by NAIA Division I Vanguard University (NAIA) in its last doubleheader of the spring break trip on Thursday afternoon.  

THE BASICS
GAME SCORES: Vanguard 4, Augsburg 2; Vanguard 8, Augsburg 0
LOCATION: Costa Mesa, Calif.
RECORDS: Augsburg 4-12 overall, Vanguard 27-7 overall

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg faced a tough opponent to close their trip, Taylor Doyle, who is 7-0 on the year, threw a four hit, seven inning gem striking out seven Auggies and allowing just two earned runs.
• The Auggies scored their two runs in the top of the sixth when Lauren Torborg (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) singled, Jacquline Nichols (FY, Royalton, Minn.) doubled to score Torborg, then Sarah Buckner (JR, Duluth, Minn./East HS) singled and both came around to score on multiple throwing errors. 
• Torborg recorded the Auggies fourth hit to finish 2-for-3, while Nichols finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. 
• Buckner finished 1-for-3, and was caught stealing. 
• Lindsay Helbach (SR, Amherst, Wis.) gave up 11 hits, but only two earned runs and one walk in 6.0 innings pitched. 

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggies recorded seven hits in game two, but couldn't get put together a rally to plate any runners, as they were shutout.
• Vanguard scored its eight runs on 10 hits, and capitalized on two Augsburg errors. 
• Taylor Mattice led Augsburg with two singles, as the Lions scattered five other singles throughout the Auggie lineup and noone finished with an extra base hit. 
• Torborg, Amanda Niznik (SO, Columbia Heights, Minn.), Bekka Kelly (SR, Columbia Heights, Minn.), Helbach, and Buckner each finished with a single in the game. 

• Courtney Larsen started in the circle for the Auggies and threw 5.1 innings giving up all eight runs (four earned), while walking two and allowing nine hits. 

FOR THE FOES
• Vanguard is ranked in the top-five in Division I NAIA in total doubles
• They also rank in the top-ten in total hits, at-bats, runs scored, runs batted in, putouts, and innings pitched.

• Augsburg takes a short break as the travel back to Minnesota before hitting the road for a doubleheader against Wartburg College in Waverly, IA next Friday (3/27) at 4 p.m.
