Emily Shilson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) claimed her second national title to close her inaugural collegiate season, leading the Auggie women's wrestling team to a ninth-place finish at the first Cliff Keen/National Wrestling Coaches Association National Collegiate Championships, completed on Saturday at Adrian University.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Shilson, who won the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association national title at 109 pounds last month, scored her second national college crown with two first-period pins on Saturday, claiming a 2:20 pin of Ciara McCrae of Simon Fraser (B.C.) in the semifinals and a 43-second pin of Sugey Cega of Tiffin (Ohio) in the finals. Shilson, who had two technical fall wins on Friday, finished her inaugural college campaign at 14-0 with six technical falls and six pins.
• With four All-Americans, Augsburg finished in ninth place in the 19-team competition, open to NCAA schools with women's wrestling programs, with 65.0 points.
• At 130 pounds,
Gabby Skidmore (FY, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) lost her semifinal match by a 6-1 decision to eventual national champion Alexia Ward of McKendree (Ill.), then dropped a 13-2 technical fall to Cindy Zepeda of Colorado Mesa and an 8-2 decision to Allison Petix of King (Tenn.) in the sixth-place match. Skidmore finished 14-6 in her first collegiate season with five pins and three technical falls.

Vayle-Rae Baker (FY, Benton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) finished her initial college campaign with a sixth-place finish at 123 pounds. She opened Saturday with a 7-7, criteria victory over Payton Stroud of McKendree (Ill.), but dropped an 11-0 technical fall to Marissa Gallegos of Colorado Mesa and an 8-2 decision to Asia Nguyen-Smith of North Central (Ill.) in the fifth-place match. Baker finished 18-5 this season with six pins and seven technical falls.

Marlynne Deede (FY, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) finished in sixth place at 155. She scored a 1:12 pin of Taylor Hites of Tiffin in her first match on Saturday, but dropped a 10-0 technical fall to Alyvia Fiske of Simon Fraser and a 2:00 pin to Annabelle Helm of Gannon (Pa.) in the fifth-place math. In her first college season, Deede finished 11-11 on the year with four pins and five technical falls.

ADRIAN, Mich. -- With four wrestlers still alive in the field, including two in championship contention, the Augsburg University women's wrestling team stands in eighth place after the first day of the Cliff Keen/National Wrestling Coaches Association National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg stands in eighth place in the 19-team competition with 41.0 points after the first day of the two-day event, open to NCAA schools with women's wrestling programs.
• Top-ranked 109-pounder
Emily Shilson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) opened her tournament run wth two 10-0 technical fall victories, the first in just 28 seconds and the second in 2:33. Shilson is now 12-0 on the season with six technical falls and four pins.
• At 130 pounds,
Gabby Skidmore (FY, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS), ranked No. 8 in the last national rankings, scored two victories to move to the semifinals -- a 1:25 pin in her first bout and a 3-2 win over Nicole Depa of Simon Fraser (B.C.) in the quarterfinals. Skidmore is now 14-3 this season, claiming five pins and three technical falls.

Vayle-Rae Baker (FY, Benton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) lost her opening match in the quarterfinals at 123 pounds, falling 10-4 to No. 5-ranked Phoenix Dubose of King (Tenn.). She rebounded with a 12-2, 3:31 technical fall win over No. 7 ranked Kassidy Block of Adrian (Mich.) to remain alive in the field. Baker is now 17-3 with six pins and seven technical falls.

Marlynne Deede (FY, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) opened her tournament run with two first-period technical-fall wins, 10-0 and 13-2, before dropping a 9-5 decision to No. 3-ranked Joye Levendusky of McKendree (Ill.). Deede, ranked No. 6 nationally, remained alive in the wrestlebacks with a 2:53 pin of Destynie Pacheco of MacMurray (Ill.). Deede is now 10-9 on the year with three pins and five technical falls.
• Four Auggies saw their seasons end on Friday.
Bel Snyder (SO, Deer Creek, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) went 1-2 with a technical fall victory at 116 pounds to finish her year at 8-13.
Kahlea Jolly (FY, Lino Lakes, Centennial HS) at 143, Ingri Ramirez (FY, South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) at 116 and
Melissa Jacobs (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West)) at 170 were all eliminated with two losses.
