Martinsen, Palmer named AHCA All-Americans, May honored

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg University men's hockey players Austin Martinsen (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) and Mason Palmer (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) were both named to the CCM Hockey/American Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-America Team, and Augsburg head coach Greg May '07 was named as one of 12 finalists for the AHCA's Edward Jeremiah Award, presented to the NCAA Divisions II/III National Coach of the Year, it was announced on Thursday.

Martinsen, the 2021-22 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, was also named as one of 12 finalists for the AHCA's Sid Watson Award, given to the best NCAA Divisions II/III men's hockey player in the country.

Martinsen was named to the West Region All-America First Team as a forward, while Palmer earned West Region All-America Second Team honors as a defender. A total of 25 players were named to the CCM Hockey/AHCA All-America Team, with three six-player teams from the East Region and two six-player teams from the West Region.

The duo bring the total of Augsburg men's hockey players awarded AHCA All-American honors to 40 in program history, the first two under coach May. It's the ninth time that Augsburg has had two or more All-Americans named in the same season. Martinsen and Palmer were both named to the All-MIAC Team earlier this month, Martinsen for the second time in his career.

Martinsen and Palmer were key players in Augsburg's run to its 11th MIAC regular-season title in 2021-22, its seventh appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament and third appearance in the national semifinals. Augsburg, ranked No. 4 for most of the season in the USCHO.com Division III national rankings, will face top-ranked Adrian (Mich.) in the semifinals on Friday (3/25) at 2 p.m. (Central time) in Lake Placid, N.Y. Under May, in his first year as Augsburg's head coach, Augsburg enters the national semifinals with a 25-4-0 overall record.

Austin MartinsenPlaying in his fifth season as an Auggie, Martinsen has had a dominant season, becoming the ninth player in Augsburg men's hockey history to earn MIAC Player of the Year honors. In 29 games this season, Martinsen has 16 goals and 22 assists for a team-best 38 points, leading the MIAC's overall statistics in points while tied for second in goals and tied for second in assists. He scored a goal or assist in 24 of his 29 games this season, with nine multi-point games. He enters the national semifinals with a five-game point streak, and has had a goal or assist in 14 of his last 15 games. Martinsen has five power-play goals, tied for third-most among MIAC players, and his plus-14 plus-minus rating is tied for ninth-best among MIAC players.

In 104 career games as an Auggie, Martinsen has 36 career goals and 53 assists for 89 points, including nine power-play goals and 10 game-winning goals, with a plus-34 career plus-minus rating.

Mason PalmerPalmer transferred to Augsburg this season after playing his first two collegiate campaigns at Division I Northern Michigan. He became one of the most dominant defenders in the MIAC, contributing 22 assists, tied for the team lead in assists and tied for second-most among MIAC players in overall statistics. His 22 assists and points were both tops among all MIAC defenders. He contributed at least one assist in 16 of his 29 games played this season, with four multi-assist games. His plus-23 plus-minus rating led all MIAC players this season, and his 24 blocked shots were fourth-best on the team.

Palmer has played in 77 games in his collegiate career, with 24 assists, a plus-seven career plus-minus rating and 43 career blocked shots.

Greg MayMay is one of 12 finalists for the AHCA's College Division (NCAA Divisions II/III) National Coach of the Year award, which includes 10 conference Coach of the Year award-winners and two others. Three of the 12 finalists are coaches of teams in Friday's NCAA semifinals.

In his first year as head coach, May led the Auggies to a 14-2-0 conference record to earn the MIAC regular-season title. Augsburg's 25 wins are second-most in a single season in school history. A four-year player for the Auggie men's hockey team (2003-07), May returned to Augsburg in September 2021 after a successful career as a coach and administrator at both the high school and collegiate levels.
