NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/2/03) -- Shelley Harris (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) pitched a three-hitter for the victory for Augsburg College in the first game, and Andrea Carroll tossed her second consecutive one-hitter for Carleton College in the second game, as the Auggies and Knights split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Carleton's Bell Field.

Augsburg won the first game 3-2, and Carleton won the second contest 4-0. Augsburg finished its season 7-29 overall and 4-18 in MIAC play, while Carleton improved to 15-13 overall, 11-9 in MIAC play.

Carroll, who threw a one-hitter against St. Olaf on April 26, allowed only a third inning double to Auggie rightfielder Trisha Pederson (So., Cloquet, Minn./Proctor HS). Only three Augsburg players reached base as Carroll face three batters over the minimum. She fanned four and walked none.

Carleton (15-13, 11-9) scratched out four runs on six hits, all singles, as it left seven runners on base in the game. The Knights loaded the bases in the first, but managed only one run on a Leslie Barry RBI groundout. In the third, a walk, fielder's choice and throwing error put runners on second and third with one out. Barry again delivered with a RBI groundout.

Carleton loaded the bases again in the fifth. Steph Lee and Cara Jones tallied consecutive singles to lead off the inning, and Amanda Espinosa was hit by a pitch. Vickie Gunderson lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Lee, but a flyout and popout ended the inning.

It didn't matter, as Carroll set down the final eight batters. Carleton did add a fourth run in the sixth when Jamie Lykken singled, moved to second on an error and scored on a Cecily Schrader run-scoring single.

In game one, Augsburg hurler Harris limited the Knights to three hits, and four Carleton errors led to three unearned runs as the Auggies prevailed, 3-2.

All the scoring for both teams came in the fifth inning. The Auggies tallied three runs on only one hit in the top of the frame. A Harris single, walk and Carleton error loaded the bases with only one out. Carleton starter Caitlyn Cornell hit the next batter, allowing one run to score. A fielder's choice allowed another run to score, but a bouncer back to Cornell looked like it would end the inning. Barry couldn't handle Cornell's throw home, however, allowing a third run to score.

Carleton nearly got all the runs back in the bottom of the frame. Gunderson led off by being hit by a pitch and Espinosa walked. Schrader ripped her first triple of the year to left field, scoring pinch runner Rebekah Solem and Espinosa. Carleton couldn't get Schrader home from third base with the equalizing run, however, and headed to the final two innings down 3-2.

Carleton threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Gunderson led off with a double to center. Espinosa's liner was right at the shortstop for the first out, and a popout and groundout ended the game.

Cornell allowed only four hits and fanned seven in arguably one of her better outings of the season. Although Carleton had only three hits, two were of the extra-base variety.

The Knights conclude their season on Saturday (5/3) at 1 p.m. at Gustavus Adolphus College. It marked Carleton's four seniors' last Bell Field appearance.
