Allyson Ruedy (SO, Waseca, Minn.) hit her team leading fifth home run of the season, but the Augsburg College softball team dropped game one of an Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference double header to Gustavus 4-1 Monday afternoon. Gustavus went on to win game two 12-0 to sweep the two-game series.
The Auggies (18-17 overall, 7-10 MIAC) currently sit in sixth-place in the MIAC regular season conference standings with five games to play, while Gustavus (20-11-1 overall, 13-2-1 MIAC) won for the 12th time in their last 14 games.
Ruedy's home run in the top of the fourth inning pulled the Auggies within three in game one. Gustavus would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning however and would hold on for the victory.
Shayna Crandall (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) started game one for Augsburg and scattered eight hits in four innings of work, while
Devon Shaut (SO, Merritt Island, Fla.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Bri Dorale (SO, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) went 1-for-3 in game one for Augsburg, recording her 40th hit of the season. Dorale currently ranks fourth in the MIAC in hits this year.
In game two, Gustavus took advantage of five Augsburg errors in the first three innings to jump out to a 9-0 lead. The Gusties would add three more in the bottom of the fourth to win game two 12-0 in five innings.
For Gustavus, Dani Cattrysse (SR, Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs to lead the Gustie offensive attack. Kate Rentschler (SO, Lakefield, Minn,/Jackson County Central HS) picked up her 13th win of the season in game two, pitching four shutout innings in the win.
Augsburg returns to action Wednesday (4/25) as they host a two game double header against Bethel at Edor Nelson Field. Wednesday's double header will mark the final home games for Augsburg seniors
