Softball ends season with split

MOORHEAD, Minn-- Laura Strandel (SR, Pine Island, Minn.) and Kelsey Stoltman (FY, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) each hit home runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the Augsburg College softball team ahead for good in the second game of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.

Augsburg (20-20 overall, 9-13 MIAC) won the second game 11-8, while Concordia (7-25 overall, 7-11 MIAC) took the first game 4-3. The win marks the second consecutive season and third-time in head coach Tim Gormley's five years as head coach that Augsburg has reached the 20-win plateau.

In the second game, Augsburg scored three times in the fifth, and six times in the sixth to secure the split against the Cobbers. Strandell's home run, her fifth of the season, drove home her team-leading 23rd and 24th runs batted in this season. 

Stoltman's home run, the first of her career, came three batters later and provided the necessary insurance for Augsburg to hold on to the win in the second game.

Jennifer Castillo (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) went 6-for-9 in the doubleheader, recording two doubles, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base for Augsburg, while Brittney Bruzek (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) went 3-for-5 and scored three runs in the twinbill.

Jessa Hinz (SR, Richfield, Minn.) recorded two doubles and an RBI, while Stephanie Saxe (JR, Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS) went 3-for-7 in the doubleheader.

Devon Shaut (SO, Merritt Island, Fla.) recorded her first career win in the second gamefor Augsburg, striking out three in five and one third innings of work.

For Concordia, Kesley Jones (JR, Billings, Mont./Billings West) went 3-for-4 and hit her third home run of the season to lead the Cobber offensive attack.
