CHASKA, Minn. --
Zach Johnson (JR, Sartell, Minn.) shot a collegiate career-best 149, leading the Augsburg College men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Macalester College Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday.
Johnson shot a 77 in the opening round at the Chaska Town Course on Saturday, and followed it up with a collegiate-best, even-par 72 in the second round at Dahlgreen Golf Course on Saturday for his 149, eclipsing his previous collegiate-best for a 36-hole event by five strokes.
As a team, Augsburg placed fourth in the nine-school, 10-team event with a 629 (313-316) total. Augsburg's junior varsity squad finished ninth with a 681 (341-340) total.
For the Augsburg varsity,
Brian Deuel (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) tied for 19th in the 68-player event with a 159 (77-82) total, while
Justin Popp (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn.) tied for 21st with a 160 (77-83) total, and
Terry Gibbons (SR, Westlake, Ohio) tied for 25th with a season-best 161 (82-79) total.
Tucker Williams (SR, Roseville, Minn.) shot 185 (95-90) on the weekend.
The Augsburg JV was led by
Drew Bahl (FY, Preston, Minn./Fillmore Central HS), who shot a season-best 162 (82-80).
Matt Bendzick (SR, Chaska, Minn.) shot 172 (85-87),
Ryan Lundeen (FY, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) shot 173 (88-85),
Silas Alberty (FY, Eagan, Minn.) shot 174 (86-88) and
Tim Herrmann (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn.) shot 182 (93-89).
Augsburg competes at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships this Saturday to Monday (10/1-3) at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, Minn.
